Sky to unveil more expensive SkyQ 'super-premium' package within days

SkyQ will allow customers to watch and record several programmes simultaneously on multiple devices inside and outside the home

Sky will test the willingness of viewers to fork out more for pay-TV as it prepares to unveil a new "super-premium" package next week.

The operator is expected to launch a new set-top box and accompanying services under the brand SkyQ on Wednesday, beginning its attempt to persuade customers to upgrade from its current top-price HD packages.

It is understood that Sky will keep pricing under wraps initially as it seeks to build demand for advanced features such as the capability to watch and record several programmes simultaneously on multiple devices inside and outside the home. The plans suggest that customers will not be able to take up the service until the new year, industry sources speculated.

Consumer spending on pay-TV is at the centre of political controversy. Tracey Crouch, the sports minister, caused anger by suggesting that families facing tax credit cuts should ditch their subscriptions to tighten their household spending. She later apologised "for giving the impression of a lack of understanding of the financial pressures many families face".

Jeremy Darroch, Sky's chief executive, this week hinted that the launch of SkyQ, together with price rises for its existing services, will offer opportunities for the company to charge more.

Speaking at a conference of investors and bankers in Barcelona this week, Mr Darroch said: "I think the opportunity for pricing is good and it is certainly our intention in the UK to do that [raise prices]. We want to do that behind innovation, behind improved service, behind improved content."

Sky is seeking to land its UK pay-TV customers with bigger fees as it faces a massive bill of its own. Over three years from next football season it will pay ?4.2bn for its Premier League rights, an increase of 83pc compared with its current deal.

It is understood that SkyQ will sit alongside existing Sky packages as the top-of-the-range option, described as "super premium" by a source. It represents the operator's biggest technological upgrade to its core pay-TV service since it introduced HD broadcasts nearly a decade ago.

SkyQ is designed to help Sky maintain its dominance in the face of an increasing challenge from internet TV providers such as Apple and Netflix, as well as the emergence of BT as a major force in pay-TV. Silicon Valley companies have been able to rapidly develop their services to be more user-friendly than traditional pay-TV.

Sky is seeking to address this competitive disadvantage. SkyQ is understood to feature a more intuitive interface that relies more on pictures than the text-heavy menus on the current Sky box. It is seeking to blend more seamlessly live, on-demand and recorded programming, with software that learns viewers' favourites and tailors menus.

The new hardware will also be capable of receiving ultra-high definition - otherwise known as 4K - programmes, but Sky is not yet expected to begin broadcasting in the new standard.

the facilities & interface are beginning to creak now, they should be offering cheap/free upgrades just to hold onto their current customers
