Apple's HomeKit is nearly here. When it lands, we'll be able to control our lights, heating, appliances and more, all from our iPhones. But here's the rub ? you'll need an Apple TV.

Apple hasn't announced that, but a support document posted on its website has confirmed that the firm's set-top box will be the hub of its HomeKit platform. You'll have to sign in with the same Apple ID on your Apple TV and iPhone or iPad. Then you'll be able to speak to control your home using Siri.

You'll need a third-generation Apple TV or later to be able to use HomeKit. That model launched in 2012.

Apple is said to have a new Apple TV up its sleeve, with Siri voice control, third-party apps and a new remote control. However, a new report says that the firm won't show off the new device at next week's WWDC. Apparently, it's not ready to be demonstrated. Harrumph.

The Cupertino company is also thought to be keeping details of its TV streaming service to itself for now. Apparently it's taking a long time to secure the rights to local TV shows all across America, which would be a feather in the service's cap, as none others offer that feature.
