Why dont we use the reputation button more often?

Why dont many of us use the reputation button? We are told to "just press the thank you button", rather than spamming, but why are'nt we told; "If this poster has been helpful to you personally, please use the reputation button at the top of the post to thank them and enhance their reputation on the site?" A bit long winded that I know but thats me all over. (No need to comment to confirm this!)
You get the idea anyway. I have been here a short while now and just realised what it was because someone else thanked me in this way and I thought that was very nice of them. No names no pack drill, but someone else on here asks if we could show our appreciation at the bottom of their posts.
I agree with them and intend to make more use of it in the future as I have received a lot of help from the members on here. I dont mean for telling a good joke or pointing out a site for bargains but help and advice on a particular question you have posed. We should show our grattitude in this way but not use it for general comments as it then becomes pointless.
I wonder how many people did'nt even realise it was there (like me) or not know what it was for (like me)? New members in particular probably don't realise its significance. I did'nt see a "sticky" relating to this when I looked up some info earlier either.
I just wanted to point this out and hope the mods will think its a good idea to use this little button more to enhance the reputation of the individual members and therefore the site in general.
Please make this button more obvious and members please use it to give credit where credit is due.
I hope I am not treading on anybodies toes here, please tell me if I am.

    Nice one Diablo13.

I had seen the little scales at the top of each persons post but did not know what they were for.

I have now increased your reputation for giving me this post and hope other people follow who were not aware of this.

First thank you Lainiebabez for the compliment. My personal opinion is that while the rep button should be used more, it should'nt be used for the reasons you have just described. Please don't take that as a dig at you because at least you are using it when most of us dont. I am a new boy here, but I just think it would serve its purpose better if it had a more specific use? The "thank you" button is adequate for what you have described and that is used quite a lot. I would just like to define the rep button a bit more precisely so that if anyone needed help they knew they could broadly relie on someones advice because they knew what they were talking about as proven by their reputation score and the thanks of others.
Thinking about it now, if you needed specific advice on a subject you could look at a list of users with high reps to see if they "specialised" in any particular field and go straight to any posts by this user for example, perhaps instead of pm'ing our poor overworked MODS. I would hope the result would be; 1. Good advice, 2. Faster searching for answers 3.Less need for repeating question and answers.
Yes I know there are specific forums for many topics but they can be diverse within the topic and if you don't know the difference between a D-box and an X-box it could just make life a little easier for all concerned.
This is just an afterthought to the original post, but it might be an advantage worth thinking about?

I thank you kind sir. You have already proved the point of the point I was making within a very short space of time. It's nice for everyone to feel useful now and again and I hope I am giving something back to this great site.

Thank you all for your kind words and especially to Berley for making it a sticky, I never expected such a compliment for my little effort.
Just trying to do my bit for the site and show my appreciation to all concerned.

Thumbs up Re: Why dont we use the reputation button more often?

I whole heartily agree with this post and did not realise so many people did not know about it.

I must admit that the only reason I found out about it was because I was advised to use it by someone , when another member helped me out. Without which I would never have known about it.

    Great Post Diablo.

The thumbnail is a great idea Ship and yes thats the trouble its a bit ambiguous having the scales symbol for it I think? When I see scales I tend to think of the "Scales of Justice" and maybe other people on here think the same. If they do they could think that it was for reporting a bad posting or something, as in retribution. Perhaps we should think about changing it for something more obvious, though I'm not sure what? Maybe we could just make it green to stand out more like the reputation point marker itself?
If I knew how to do it I would steal your little sketch to use as part of my signature, with your permission of course, with a line like " If someone has been helpful to you with your problem please add to their Reputation with the Rep button to thank them for it". What do you think?
