and i need to fix my dreambox so i know i need the 9pin serial port
to do this but i was wondering if the lead with a 9pin at 1 end and usb other end would work with my laptop

yes it can work, but some people have struggled, but i have been using a serial to usb for about 3 months now, and it has always worked for me, but i did struggle to find a suitable driver for it !!

forget it mate unless its from a reputable place that you can return it to if it dont work, i have tried 3 of those things over the years and none worked, waste of time mate in my opinion unless you can return it easily as i say.
in the end i just bought a laptop computer that does have a serial port and that saved me a lot of hassle over the years, not the cheapest of options but by far the best option for me. (adding a serial port card or header to the motherboard doesnt always work either, been there, seen it, done it.)

meant to say, if its just windows xp 32 bit then you might have good luck with one of those cables, you might get lucky, but if its windows 7 64bit or vista 64bit and things like that, then i would say forget it unless it has a gaurantee on the packaging that it will work, if not take it back.
