    suggestions please

Asyou can see bymy post in the DIY section the house renovating is in full swing, so I need to get my 5hit together and sort out all the other little bits.

I need to build some sort of server at home to store music, films, photos, etc. Also to run a phone system ( VOIP ), and hopefully share a lot of files with you lot once built.

it needs to be accessible from the following other bits of equipment

    1. two small comps for the kids running more than likely xp home as they are being built around the epia m boards.

    2. the missus netbook running again xp home - thankyou Virgin

    3. my work laptop running xp pro

    4. the xbox360

so what do i go for

windows home server edition, a full windows server edition, just a copy of media centre, windows vista or even windows 7?

The computer itself I have in mind will be a p4 with 1gb ram with as many hdd's drive as i can fit in the case - i have about 2tb of odd drives hanging around the place that i have been keeping for such a project.

as always all replies are greatly appreciated - im sure i will add more things to what it needs to do as i think of them

    Buck

well i'd say go for windows home server. You can get a free trial from them to test out. A friend has his house networked using it and he says works flawlessly. He can even connect when at other locations.

I'm sure there are alternatives but if i was gonna seriously network the house I'd use WHS

While i was surfing I found an add on that seemed fitting for this forum:

I just bought a computer mag called micromart. Seems to have articles about home networking/servers/NAS drives might help ya out.
