    my quick 2 pence

Fedora core is an amasing peice off work.. its only let down is the software we are all used to.. True firefox is there but programs like Photoshop are not and instead you have to use programs like GIMP which is just as good as photoshop but its not what you know and learnt on (hope you understand what i mean).

Also Games. this is another let down so to speek game compatabilitsy is not the same.. you can use programs like Wine or Trans Gaming (Hidden Content ) but its just not the same..

Over all if the software was there for Linux like it is for windows i would uninstall windows in a shot.. (Not a fan of Bill "The Devil" Gates) But untill that time i will continue to dual boot the 2 os's

Hopefully you should be intrested in this now if you are after any answers to your questions please ask them and i'll (and others) will try our best to answer them.

FC5 is excellent - however it doesn't arrive with mp3 support or much media playing ability 'out of the box'. These can be separately downloaded and installed, but you'll need to know your way around the system before you can do that.

It's difficult to say which is the best linux os. They're all broadly based around the same or similar packages. However the installation of each differ and suit different people in different ways.

A lot of people start with something like ubuntu (basically a smartened up debian with a nice installer).

They're all (generally) free so best bet is to try a few (download limits allowing) and see how you go

    Re: Fedora Core 5

I use Hidden Content as its small.
It plays mp3s and most video media files and has the usual internet apps installed 'out of the box'. Theres also an easy netpkg installer for installing other software.

Thought I'd used just about every version of Linux - but never seen that one before!! Based around XFCE rather than the usal KDE and/or Gnome so my guess is much slicker and quicker, especially on 'older' hardware.

    Nice find! Cheers!!

    To anyone who's interested ..

    Not at all these days.

By far the hardest thing is to make room on your current disk for the install (assuming you want to keep your windows system as well - dual boot)

The usual suggestions apply though. Prob best to install onto a separate hard-drive if you've got one you can fit to your pc. Otherwise make sure you back up thoroughly as it is possible to accidently wipe out your windows partition, particularly if its the first time you've installed linux

do you mean unpacking a tar file? cos that would be tar -xvf
    alternatively just type man tar
