Despite being heavier and having slightly less power, the S8 shows its executive sedan dominance on the runway. The RS 6 Avant may be the hottest car in Audi's lineup right now, but it's not the only thing the company makes with that massively powerful and torquey 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 under the hood. There's also the bigger, understated S8 sedan. And despite the added weight and less powerful tune, it's able to best the RS 6 in a straight-up drag. The Carwow YouTube channel thought it would be a good idea to pit the two big Audis against each other on a runway to see which is quickest in a straight line. In three out of three drag races, the S8 is able to get a better launch at the start, holding its small lead up to the finish line. Pretty surprising considering it weighs more and makes slightly less horsepower. It's a different story during a roll race, though. With both cars in a low gear, the RS 6 takes off at the start and leaves the S8 in the dust. In a braking test from 70 mph, it's also able to best the S8—as it should, with those carbon-ceramic rotors. As great as the RS 6 is, there is something deeply appealing about an unassuming, under-styled black sedan that can go this quickly. While pretty much everyone on staff here at R&T would undoubtedly go for the wagon, we wouldn't be surprised to see some folks choose the S8 instead. It's a real sleeper.
