    push fit or solder?

Are pushfit fittings any good in the long term?

I trust a solid solder joint over a small rubber seal any day.
Rubber can perish. I wonder what will happen in 15 to 20 years time when
the seals start to break down.

Anyone got any thoughts on this?

    Rubber does not last forever

Going on what people have said I am thinking I should stick with solder!

    Re: push fit or solder?

When i did my extension thames water told me that i could,nt use plastic drain fittings because they havent stood the test of time.
They said i could only use clay.

Safer then to stick with solder although these plastic push fits have been around for a fair while now.

Only other thing i would say is they look sh_t.

Both systems work well so you can utilise both as I am about to redo my CH system using both, but the majority will be push-fit.

    Re: push fit or solder?

Just had a speed fit seal break after 5 years - its unlikely a solder joint would perish this quickly!

Replaced with solder joint and now feel alot happier

Speedfit is the best, but not as nice looking as copper. If its hidden go with speefit, anything on show or semi visiblie use copper

    Re: push fit or solder?

hmm just fitted a shower and i used solder BUT i also fitted a electric shower nextdoor and it was with pushfit... hmm i dont like them much it dident feel right as you could still move the pipe on the joint (Elbow) and there was no real effort on installing them.. its all in and hidden so there is no big diffrence there (its out of site) but push are bulker... but maybe it's me once its done you shouldent be able to twist and move it about............

the best way i can put it

i feel more safe with solder BUT pushfit do work and tbh in 15-20 i'll have no idea what i would be doing but when using pusfit i noticed you could by replecment rubber ends (internal rings) incase you misplased had to remove a old pair and they were only a few pence and with how easy it was to install so if it did go in 15 years i'd just replace Hidden Content and thats if they DO need replacing

i diden't use Speed fit i used Push fit similar idea just the only diffrence is you screw on the end

    Re: push fit or solder?

    hi there
just a quick answer to this question. yes solder may seem to be better but a few things have happened in the last few years. one.. hep2.0 etc have gotten a lot better and the grip fasteners and coiled inserts are rated for a minnimum of 25 years. 2) okay not a big point maybe but they are far more enviromentally friendly. 3) in the last 3 years the chinese etc have bought so much of the coppper in this world for there massive manufacturing of products that contain copper that the price has increased 10 fold. so copper will dissapear here within the next 10 years regardless of wether we want it or not. 4) plumbers of which i am one can save us and you a lot of money because it cuts our instalation time of say a full central heating system by 2 days. which saves the customer around ?300. ilove yorkshire fittings but to be honest they are on there way out.. sorry
