    bmw instrument cluster problem

wondering if any body has come across this before, my daughter has a 12 year old bmw, last week the instrument cluster went haywire, all the dials started jumping around, even when the engine is turned off with keys out they still jump. still drives ok but its scary seeing dials going mad. i have googled it , but can not find any answers that solve it. any help would be grateful

    Re: bmw instrument cluster problem

Hi have you tried disconnecting the battery for a few seconds and then reconecting it'll sometimes reset the electronics.
Give it a try and let us know if it works.
    Thanks John.

i have already tried that, but no luck. have checked fuses as well. i tend to think its maybe a grounding point somewhere. does anyone know where the grounding is for the cluster board

I would start by checking the main battey earth and battery terminal connections to start with.

    Re: bmw instrument cluster problem

yep i'd go with a grounding fault too or power feed

most problems are often causd by roaddust eventually infiltrating the pushfit conectors and causing and int O/C

whatever the issue its obv you need to haul it out and look see

a can of switch cleaner [NOT WD40] [try maplins servisol 10] sprayed around the board
and inside the connectors should help.

there are often too many strips of sprung metal that do the same too

    dx
    its nice here....
