Help with freeview + recorders
Hello,
I have two fairly cheap freeview plus recorders, both of which seem to have suffered the same fate, whereby the recordings are really choppy, to the point of being unwatchable. They both lasted for about a year before doing this.
It this likely to be a problem with the hard drives or is it something else?
Anyone know if this can be fixed?
Thanks for any help.

Re: Help with freeview + recorders
I am not sure if you have any othher hard drives knocking about as i would assume these freeview boxs are out of warranty now, could you try a different one or maybe take them out and format them i don`t know if this is possible with these as i have never had one.If you just watch the freeview is the picture ok and who makes them?

Re: Help with freeview + recorders
Freeview recorders I have had always allowed formatting of the internal hdd.
It should be in your settings, or advanced settings somewhere?
Remember a format will lose anything already recorded, as well as preset program timers, but those can be reset once you have playback working properly again.
I don't know which boxes you have, but I can't imagine any of them won't have a format option?

Re: Help with freeview + recorders
If its not a signal issue, some times your antenna can fail if its bad weather.
Most likely a hard disk thing, technical stuff about to follow.
Its like a hard disk on a computer, when you delete things at random it needs defraging.
Think of a spiral, the things you record first are stored in the centre.
After a while you delete chunks of things, some things you keep to watch later.
What happens is the gaps are now random. The free space thats available is written to these spaces.
When your freeview tries to play them it has to jump around back and forth to read the information from the hard disk.
Best to wipe the disk somewhere in the menu settings.
It will be like a new hard disk, other things are hard disk failure.
Hard disks have an amount of time before they will fail. Could be bad sectors that make it impossible to read correctly.
Most of them will use standard hard disks like on desktop pcs, if you feel competent you could open it up and swap them over.
Hope that helps.

Asked and answered with my opinion in your own thread, where you asked the same question.
There is no need to double post m8.

Re: Help with freeview + recorders
I've had my current box for around 3-4 years now. I've experienced some similar problems but it was only ever really when the HDD was nearly full. It would often change channel at will and freeze during playback of recorded programmes. I just make sure I don't go over around 75% of the space and it seems to help.
