cars whats required for M O T
What the MOT test includes
The MOT looks at some important items on your car to see that they meet key legal requirements at the time of test.
The body and vehicle structure
Is free from excessive corrosion or damage in specific areas and there are no sharp edges likely to cause injury.
The fuel System
Has no leaks and the fuel cap fastens and seals securely. The fuel cap will need to be opened so be sure the key is available.
The exhaust emissions
The vehicle meets the requirements for exhaust emissions, dependant on the age and fuel type of the vehicle.
The exhaust system
Is secure, complete, without serious leaks and silences effectively.
The seat belts
All belts installed are checked for type, condition, operation and security. All compulsory seat belts must be in place.
The seats
The front seats are secure. Front and rear backseats can be secured in the upright position.
Components to be inspected
The doors
Latch securely in closed position. Front doors should open from inside and outside the vehicle. Rear doors may need to be opened to gain access to testable items.
The mirrors
The minimum numbers are on the vehicle, their condition and security.
Load security
Boot or tailgate can be secured in the closed position.
The brakes
Their condition, operation and performance (efficiency test). Note the removal of the road wheels is not part of the test.
The tyres and wheels
Their condition, security, size, type and tread depth. Spare tyres are not inspected.
The registration plates
Their condition, security, characters correctly formed and spaced.
The lights
Their condition, operation and security. Headlamps for aim.

The horn
Operates correctly and is of a suitable type.
The steering and suspension
Are of a satisfactory condition and operation.
The vehicle identification number (VIN)

Where to go for an MOT test
There are around 19,000 garages authorised as MOT test stations across the country that can carry out your MOT test. The blue three triangles logo is displayed to identify authorised test stations. The maximum fee for the test must be displayed on a poster inside every test station. The station, however, can charge less than what is on the poster if they want to.
How vehicles are tested
MOT test stations have designated test bays where they conduct the test, using a range of equipment that meets the required specification for MOT testing. The standard test procedures are laid out in an inspection manual that the test station should make available on request.
If your vehicle has failed the test, you?ll be given a failure document with reference to this manual. You can watch the test from a designated viewing area but you are not allowed to interrupt the tester while he is working.
All MOT testers have been on a training course with the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) and their test results are checked regularly.
Who supervises the scheme?
VOSA is the government agency responsible for supervising the MOT scheme. It does this by:
* authorising MOT test stations and approving MOT testers
* setting standards for testing and requirements for authorisation for the MOT test station and testers
* training authorised examiners and MOT testers
* visiting MOT test stations and carrying out checks to ensure testing standards and facilities are maintained
* giving advice and taking disciplinary action where tests are not being carried out to the required standards
* dealing with appeals and complaints from MOT customers

Re: cars whats required for M O T
A useful post pipehose.
Anyone printing your checklist should be able to do a decent pre test themselves and maybe avoid getting a fail certificate.
You used to get a free re test of the failures within 3 days, but my local MOT tester tells me that nowadays you can be charged the full re test fee if you fail and have to come back?

The MOT garage down the road from me does the MOT and you dont have to pay till it passes. The other advantage about that place is they do not carry out any repairs to any of the cars so they have no interest in saying this needs doing or that needs doing as they wont get any money that way from you! Which i thought was pretty good only thing is you have to be careful if you dont book it in over the internet it costs you more though.

Re: cars whats required for M O T
M.O.T means motor overhaul test, a motor car is safe on road for 12 months such as tyres, rust, condition of steering, brakes, lightings, etc, some one may able to add.

Re: cars whats required for M O T
A very good link and a useful heads up post for many of us threeseven.
I had no idea the mot was changing so much, but with all the electrical gizmos now built into modern cars, it does make sense to adjust the test to include them?
It does slightly worry me though that a newer model car with all the new safety refinements built in, will be so strictly tested.
While an older and potentially more unsafe car, without all these inbuilt features and warnings will not!
If things are not fitted from standard there is no requirement to check them and less things to fail on, which seems to be a good point in favour of getting an older car?

Re: cars whats required for M O T
I think it is still mainly down to the standards of the driver that determine how safe a vehicle is. Driving is dangerous, but manufacturers are attempting to make it easier, not safer, with all these assists. If you need the car to park it's self or a light to tell you you have a flat tyre because you can't determine this for yourself, should you really be on the road?

Re: cars whats required for M O T
Just another quick snippet of info
As of November this year any pre 1960 vehicle will not require a MOT certificate.
The vehicle must still be maintained in a roadworthy condition, and may be submitted for testing if the owner wants.

Wow I thought it was much less than that, that's 52 years and I thought they became a classic and exempt mot at 25 or so?
I think they used to say that a VW Beetle was longer at 30 years because there were so many of the old ones around which refused to rot and die?
Not that I would ever want a Beetle though, my ex had a 1969 one years ago, horrible thing with no rear vision, no fans and the heat came straight off the exhaust manifold or something!

Re: cars whats required for M O T
I think you are getting muddled up with tax exempt. That used to be 25 years, but it is currently frozen at 1972.
Hidden Content About the beetles. I never saw the appeal, you can forgive slow and noisey if it offers an interesting driving experience but they are just a bit dull!
hopefully not offended any beetle drivers here Hidden Content

Original Minis FTW!! The Beelte is horrid!! Long live the Mini . , . . Well the British one not that German hunk of cr&p they call "A Mini" now Hidden Content
I think its a bit wrong that they have set a certain yesr to exempt cars from having a mot or paying tax on it they should do it over a certain age!! Any car over 50 years should be exempt from MOT and tax and any car over 25 years should be exempt from tax but the Good old goverment seems to think that they can do as they like again L(

Loads of changes
Now there has been loads of changes to the mots, if you have an advisory on something for 2 years in a row then it fails, i just did for a car that had done 100 miles in a year. Also stuff like airbag and abs lights on now mean it fails.

I2000
Great info,I think the free retest period varies from garage to garage I get 14 days at my local garage but i don't usually need it,i think you can take it a month early then you get 13 months if it passes but gives you time to fix it if it fails,my opel manta just passed with no advisories.
