    Strange Network Problem

    Hi all

Ok i sell my internet connection to a couple of people in the rented house i live in to keep the cost down.

but i have this weird network error that is really annoying.
    Some background
I have a Netgear WNR 2000 Wireless N Router brand new

i have 2 desktops hardwired to the router
the other 2 people have laptops connected to the wireless network
    one is running windows seven
the other is running vista sp2

ok me and the seven laptop have no issues with the internet but vista girl gets dropouts where the network access logo in the taskbar gets a yellow traingle over it

Ive already changed the router for a new one, ive updated the firmware on the router, ive installed sp2 for her and updated her wireless card drivers to the latest.

I just cant find what the hell is causing this error

when it happens she cant get back on even with reboot, i have to resetthe router and all is good for a while,
after i updated her it was fine for 4-5 days then it starts again?

    any ideas??

    Re: Strange Network Problem

    try this.....

Go to Control panel -> Windows Security Center -> Windows Firewall

Then click on Change settings (appears a blue underlined text)

User Account Control will ask for your permission to continue -> grant it
Click on the Exception tab (middle)

Scroll down to Wireless Portable Devices (the very last one on my PC)

Check the box next to it (in front of it)

    Click Apply, then OK

Close the program, and now try to connect

    Re: Strange Network Problem

    Ok update on this

i tried the suggestion and all seemed well for about 3 days then it dropped connection again

its only the vista that does it

another thing ive noticed is if i leave my pc idling whith nothing running it seems to make the problem happen, if i come and go as normal it seems ok for a short while anyway.

then it drops it for no reason when im not in the house
if she leaves it connected all the time 24/7 it seems to keep the connection going

its a strange one and very annoying

    Re: Strange Network Problem

look in the events log on the lappy
you should see something an error listed for each time it drops to limited connection?

its something like the lappy cannot contact the master pc to get a name or something.

google that error and you'll get your answer.

cant remember the details, but it used to be quite a common error on XO when the MASTER list PC went into screen saver or WHY.

    Re: Strange Network Problem

    yep
change the name of your AP SSID so the laptop sees a difference wireless network name.

every thread i've read on these issues suggest it.

the only other exp is a dicky wireless receiver in the lappy.

    Re: Strange Network Problem

gonna swing back and suggest some basics

download and run glary utils on the lappy

    crack for pro is:
    Name: crys18
    Serial: 4788-61679-5818279
    1788-61679-5812154

    if that does nowt.

turn off any wireless encryption and run with that

    report back on any changes.

    Re: Strange Network Problem

does it not look like the lease for the ip address is not renewing

and when it tries to renew the ip its not abble to

using your router as a dhcp provider for the laptop

try setting up a static ip on the laptop and allow that ip through the firewall on the router ports to.

Have you set the speed up on the router for the wireless to max (300mbps) or so

the yellow sign normally means limited connection.

could there be something interfearing with the signal, is the signal strenth constant

daft question the laptop is connecting to the router right and not with the other lappy as a bridged connection ?

just some ideas i am by no means an expert on wireless connections
