    laptop and netbook probs

problem 1: my daughters lappy wont fire up, I'll give you as much info as she's given me

She told me the screen had been (blinking) ? for about a month, then the other day the battery run out of charge, the next time she tried to use it after charging it it just wont fire up, the lights come on at the front of the lappy but nothing else happens

problem 2 but its a netbook this time, when i press that to come on it fires up but not into the OS it only goes as far as the screen lighting up and theres a big line down the middle (almost like there's a crack on the screen) but there isn't

I've upload a screenie of the netbook, it makes all the right noises when i turn it on ie the didg dong ding dong sorta noise when its loading windows, but the screen just stays the same Hidden Content

    Re: laptop and netbook probs

Do you have access to monitor? If so, connect up the laptop with the stripe to it. If the stripe appears on the monitor you know it's the graphics card in the laptop that has gone. If not, you know it's the laptop screen.

Most flat screen TVs can take a computer input if you don't have a monitor.

    And what models are they?

At least you know it's the monitor on the laptop that is the problem. No idea how you go about fixing them.

Might the monitor just need the reset switch pressed? Just a guess.

And what make/model is the other machine? I had a problem with a HP laptop once where it had overheated. Would not come back on immediately, but if I left it a while it would. But then switch back off again.

    Re: laptop and netbook probs

the laptop is an older model NEC versa P550/FP550, I've spoken to a guy from wod that fixes laptops and going by what ive told him about the screen flickering he said it needs a new inverter (invertor) ? , I have got the laptop up and running again at the moment but noticed that when i charged it then took the adapter out the silver bit that plugs into the laptop burnt my finger, it wasn't just your normal warm feel i actually had to drop it as it burnt me, tbh im swithering on whether its even worth getting fixed due to its age.

the netbook (faulty screen one) is an acer aspire one ZG5 series, it only cost ?160 new so I'd probably need to weigh up whether parts and labour for a new one is worth it

I've checked ebay and there's a few faulty acer aspire one netbooks on there so i might just ebay it as faulty, the annoying thing about the netbook is that although its 18 months old its seldom used and probably only ever been switched on abut 40 times in total, I guess they are just naff netbooks Hidden Content

oh and the monitor i dunno about that, ive just put a new one in its place the now and will check if there's a reset switch, not too worried about it tho cos i didn't like it anyway Hidden Content

    Re: laptop and netbook probs

The first one id guess the graphics chip is cooked or posibly the back light is faulty probably more likely the backlight.
    should be 40 - 60 quid fix

the second one is probable the screen and they can be between 80 - 140 fitted when i do them.

the inverter is the backlight i mentioned, it makes your screen visible

    Re: laptop and netbook probs

If the netbook is fine on an external monitor it is more likely to be the display or the ribbon at fault rather than the graphics chip. Though from the black mark at the bottom of the darker blue stripe on display I would say it's the screen.

The invertor going on the laptop shouldn't prevent it from turning on. The fact you got a shock from the DC jack is worrying...

    Re: laptop and netbook probs

the netbook is fine on an external monitor so its pretty safe to say its the lcd

At the minute the laptop is now turning on but im very dubious about even letting my daughter use it now due to the heat from the DC jack and D'oh! why couldn't i remember thats what it was called when i typed my earlier post Hidden Content

i agree with little_pob about the graphics chip, to me it looks like it could possibly be the ribbon cable damaged with constant opening and closeing, if it were the inverter you would still see some sort of pic even though it would be very very dark, on the other hand it could also be where the ribbon cable connects behind the lcd screen have seen that a few times, if you feel confident enough i would look up on ebay find one with a totally different fault but working screen buy it have alook around for the service guide on the net and try urself, am not sure if i have the service guide for one but i,ll look and if i have i,ll forward on a copy for you. jon.

Hi jon the screenie i've attached is the netbook

I've been advised its the lappy that could be needing the inverter replaced

I think i'll get the netbook fixed and use the HD from the laptop for my DM600 S, thanks to all who replied Hidden Content

hi berley, thats why i said it could possibly be the screen ribbon cable or where it attaches to the pcb behind the lcd screen is possibly damaged.....i looked at the pic and was just pointing out that had it been the inverter (which i am pretty sure its not) you would still see a very very darkend pic. are you a member of rapidshare?. as i found a link to the service guide i was talking about, can yo confirm it is a acer aspire zg5. cheers jon.

    Re: laptop and netbook probs

Thanks a million Jon, I'll download it tomorrow morning or later tonight when my downloads speeds improve, atm I cant say I'd be confident to do it myself but my confidence might grow once Ive had a read of the guide

if its just a ribbon fault is there a chance i wont need a new screen ?

    I've looked at this

    Hidden Content

does that come with a new ribbon as well ?

    Re: laptop and netbook probs

hi berley, it depends on if the fault is on the motherboard side where it clips into and somehow has worked loose but if its at the other end behind the screen well then thats where it all begins because you would have to disassemble the screen and check the connections there. its highly likely that where the ribbon attaches to the pcb is possibly damaged or the pcb itself is damaged, but have alook at the service guide.......i,ve just had a quick look berley and it covers the stripping down of the lcd screen. if i can help you out just give a shout m8. cheers jon. am away to bed its way past my time Hidden Content good nite all.
