    Part P certificate?

    Hi
I'm doing a garage conversion with building control policing me and i need to get a certificate for the electrics.
I had a sparky come round to the job who tells me he can give me one but he did'nt seem to totally know what was required.
Do part P certifiers carry any sort of ID?
Does this certificate have a special number?
Does anyone have an example of a certificate?

The main concern with the electric is the saniflo system we are installing.
The main board has the old style fuse with no rcd's.

I have run 2 x 2.5mm cables to where the sanoflo system is (ie next to the toilet) as part of the ring main.
He tells me he can put and rcd and fuse down to 5 Amp next to the toilet.
This don't sound right to me....does anyone know if that is an ok thing to do?
    Any help much appreciated

    Re: Part P certificate?

The certificate I received was from NICEIC as my sparky was registered with them - it mentioned nothing about Part P though.

    Cheers

    Re: Part P certificate?

Hidden Content That what he intended to do...something tells me i should steer well clear.
I got someone else to look at it today and this guy seems to make more sense.
The rules on these electrical laws are very confusing as everyone seems to have a different opinion.

This new guy tells me that if you run a cable down a wall, it has to be on an rcd.
He also said that where there is a junction/connection in the ceiling it has accessible even if that means putting an access hatch in as i have to due to the ceiling being suspended. It is going to be a bit unsightly tho.

He recons that unless you are part P certified, you cant even run cables and you can get up to a ?15000 fine.
Is this an exaggeration? ......Something tells me that all this regulation is just one long gravey train.

anyone can run and connect up sockets, lights or fusespurs as long as you are Competenet of doing so and get someone with a Part p, NICEIC or ECA that can come round and check and test it for you, and give you a certification of electrical installation work associated with that job.

I thought he was going a bit overboard with the "don't touch it or you'll get knicked" bit.
I guess it makes good business sense to discourage DIY electrical work.

    Re: Part P certificate?

If building control are asking for a certificate it may be filled out by any qualified competent electrician. I have done this and included copies of my qualifications. If you do use an electrician who is part p registered he would register it under whatever scheme he is registered with ie: niceic / elecsa. RCD protection is not required if cables are run in mini trunking (visable from consumer unit to outlet). I would rcd protect the cables to the saniflos by installing a rcd fused outlet at high level outside the bathroom.

    Re: Part P certificate?

Part P is prt of the building regs and is to do informing the counsil of changes to the electrical installation of the building. When an electrician does work and gives his certicates to the NICEIC they inform the counsil for you.

old thread but just for further reference.
The work much be completed by a competent person... if you know what you are doing then you can do the work yourself and get the council to inspect it for you and sign it off. costs money but it might be cheaper than a sparky.
Part P is not a qualification, it is part of the building regulations. It is a set of standards, so it isn't a qual that you would have, it simply means that you are competent under those regs.
