I just brought one from maplin just over a week ago, and have no complaints so far
It is more for desktop use, rather than a portable device, but it comes with a limited 5 year Warranty.
U can save a few quid with the vouchers U recieve when U signup online, or by purchasing a catalogue and using the vouchers in there.
would have to agree with stew.
got one of these babies and they rock.
I've owned two different brands. Can definitely recommend the Western Digital My Book drives (I have four, 3x320Gb and a 500Gb one). No problems since purchase which must be at least six months ago.
I also had three Maxtor One Touch drives, two failed within one year of purchase.
Hope this helps.
Tony
Or you could get the 500gb 7200rpm Maxtor for ?75... think this works out to be slightly cheaper/GB (15p v/s 16.6p).

I have a seagate freeagent 500GB hard drive, and it is good, quiet and fast only downside is you lose 45GB once formatted.
Dude, that's normal for any HDD you use.
160 gb actually formats to about 147, 250 actually formats to about 220-ish I think... and so on. The HDD reserves this space for its file structure / etc info.

depends on the drive i beleive they do differ, i have a nas drive with a WD 160GB hard drive in and this only drops 8GB when formatted.
Hi mate get yourself a hard drive caddy preferably Sata 2 and buy yourself a big whopping hard drive online at ebay or some online shop, scan.com, overclockers.co.uk i gaurantee it will be cheaper than any external enclosure from Maplin or Pcworld.
I just got a Lacie 250GB with a Firewire 800 connection it is fast and draws its power from the firewire cable so need for a power adaptor. I think its a great choice if you want to go mobile
I just brought a freeagent 750gb and its very silent
I purchased a Medion HDDrive 2 Go from ALDI about 6 months ago. It's not given me ANY hassle and is very portable. It was just under ?70 when I got it. You may be able to get them cheaper now I should think.
Although, ALDI only seem to do things for a short period of time. Hidden Content
I got a Western Digital 250GB hard drive last month, not as much storage as you asked for, but small enough to fit in your pocket. Great for backing up music files.
I also have a 500Gb Aldi special had it over 6months & not a jot of bother, ?70 from memory...
They will have them in again I am sure of that...
Go for Seagate as the design is good and warranty is longer. Some external 2.5" drives have heating problems so go for drives with Aluminium case to dissipate heat.
CAUTION ON ALL EXTERNAL DRIVES: Keep these drives in a stable places whilst connected as moving it roughly or any jerks most likely will damage the drive.
