BMW is doing a huge marketing push to drum up hype for its first-ever M3 Touring. Set to be released later this month for European markets only, it'll come standard in Competition trim, meaning xDrive, an eight-speed automatic and a 503-hp twin-turbo straight-six under the hood. BMW announced Thursday it's also the quickest production wagon to ever lap the Nürburgring.
BMW M published a video to YouTube on Thursday documenting the M3 Touring's Nürburgring lap record attempt. While we aren't shown the full onboard lap, we are given a peek inside the development process, as well as an official lap time: 7:35.06. The time is just 15 seconds off the lap set last month by the much more extreme M4 CSL. It's also exactly as quick as a Tesla Model S Plaid, which holds the record for quickest EV around the Green Hell.
The M3 Touring's time of 7:35 means it's 10 seconds quicker than the previous record-holder for quickest wagon around the 'Ring, the Mercedes-AMG E63 S. That car set a time of 7:45 at the hands of German publication Sport Auto during a track test in 2021.
