New Hybrid Mercedes-AMG C63 on the 'Ring

The Mercedes-AMG C63 is about to undergo a transformation. After 17 years of V-8 power in the top-trim C-Class, the next-generation car is ditching it for a four-cylinder hybrid setup. To hear what that's like going around the Nürburgring, you can now watch this new video from Carspotter Jeroen.Frankly, there's not much to hear. The four-cylinder powerplant is quite subdued, overwhelmed at some points by tire noise. Don't mistake that for a reflection on its power. Reporting from Autocar a few weeks back suggests that the upcoming C63 hybrid will have a combined output of 660 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, with 463 hp coming from the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder on its own. That means the M139 should break its own record—from the GLA45 and CLA45—for the most potent four-cylinder production engine ever.Despite going hybrid, the C63 should also weigh less than the outgoing model. Speed, then, shouldn't be an issue. We'll just have to see if AMG got the noise, handling, and engagement right with this new model.
