Hi
I`m thinking of building a 5ft high wall 20ft long, how deep does the foundations have to be.

personally i would make them a metre deep m8 for safety reasons and make sure you have enough piers in the wall to give it strength i would have at least 4 piers 9x9 each

all depends on your soil conditions matey.
also if your getting the local concil involved.
if it was me,in my garden i would keep digging down until i hit clay..you know when you'v hit it..brown shiney hard as hell to dig....

need to hit clay and then as a rule of thumb go down 2 feet further.
when i did foundations for my house hit clay straight away so went down 3 feet. sisters house they had to go down 9 feet

All depends what you'r ground conditions are at the moment, as it is not a load baring wall by the sounds of it, just go till you hit clay.
Have seen foundations only half meter deep by half meter wide

make sure when pour the concrete keep it a minmum of 6 inches and try make sure the steel you put in is near the middle i.e 3 inch .
