bit of an awkward area to answer completely.mod chips are better but they tend to put extra strain on the dvd laser (unless dms4 which can be solderless but unobtainable at the mo,had mine for 2 yrs all ok).other chips not really sure coz to fiddly to do unless u a soldering expert ...i'm good but didnt wanna push my luck ...soldering to surface mounts .....no rather not ...swap disc do work brill with most games (ea games are the least compatable) but not a thing for a kid to faff around with ,can be awkward to get the slide tool to work.a flip top lid on the older ps2 is the better way to resolve the problem(and child friendy)..SO in answer to your question ...if you know someone that will supply and fit the chip (decent one dms fav but dearer) then chip ...if sceptical then swap disks and flip top would be safer and cheaper)
go to modchips.com or similar site and check it out

if its the smaller one i wouldnt personally bother.bigger ones can be got cheaper ..have that done...there was a reason they made it smaller ..more difficult....pm me might be able to have a deal on mine...
