I've had this problem with my xp software since I reistalled it. when I change something in the display properties menu, such as a screensaver or a desktop picture, and then press apply or okay, the menu freezes, or more often freezes for 2-3 minutes. I've done several online virus scans , and found noting. Is there a way to solve this, maybe by resolving a script error or something.

Thanks for any help.

there could be 1001 reasons for this.

1st as admin user
create a new user and see if it happens to the new user.

2nd uninstall then reinstall your grahics driver.

3rd reboot in safe mode, then changed your setting and set if it cures it.

4th as you indicate to doing a re-install, i bet it could also be a stuck user profile.
goto into doc/setting folder & delete any user profile folders there that have old dates by then from before your reinstall

Thanks for replying and your kind suggestions. I can reveal the result of which, hereunder:

New user name: Created one but made no difference, also ckecked for old files in the doc and sett's - folder and none found.

Uninstalled and reinstalled graphics drivers - made no difference - even when there were no drivers.

Safe Mode: The menu never froze and worked at lightning speed when I pressed okay or apply. Only thing is it didn't actually change the screensaver or the backgroung image, but the menu worked. I'm thinking maybe u can't chamge screensavers in safe mode.

I've got another problem now. It takes arounf 5 mins fo the logon page to load meanwhile it shows a blank screen. Once I logon It then takes another 5 mins for the desktop icons to appear, atart menu to appear and the progams to load; meanwhile all I see is my desktop background. I should I can use alt cltr delt, which shows that no programs have loaded and they only load after the long delay

Click start then run and type
msconfig and click ok
click the startup tab and see if there is anything in there that
you dont need to run a startup and untick the box.
See if that helps it.

1: Start menu, settings, control panel, Administrative Tools & check event viewer to see if thats pin pointed whats causing the trouble.

2: Go into device manager and make sure everything has a working driver like ide controllers

erm.
i'm beginning to go with my initial untyped thoughts that there is more to these problems than meets the eye. esp you 'need' to reinstall the O/S.

can you do two more things:

1. goto the panda online scanner site and run that.
then copy & paste the results

2. then download and run Ccleaner

when you have let Ccleaner do its bit.

run it again & go into the system/startup icon bit & copy & paste those things that show as running/resident on the PC also

just got back. Thanks for all advice so far.

I'm going try the scans in a minute, but i can't use the run facility - i'm going to restart in safe mode and try.

I did try event viewer and under system it shows about a hundred cdrom errors, when i click on one of them it says Device\cdrom0\ has a bad block.

I'm guessing this means i have hard drive problems.

Thanks for the advice but I can't get sfc /scannow working. Any way I think it is a Virus, because I've got two operating systems on my computer; each on seperate hard disks, and one of these worked perfectly. However, this morning the working one has caught the same problem as the other one - delay start up, search and run not working properly.

I have 2 network hardrives attached to my system (they contain a backup of all my stuff). I opened a zip file today and found a funny file inside it. I chewcked this file with Kapersky online and it said it was the following virus.
Email-Worm.Win32.Glowa.g.

This dirty little virus has inserted itself into my backup drives and into zip files. I have no options, i need to get rid of this virus.

Any help appreciated

dx100uk thanks for advice, I've just managed to get the panda scan working and I will post it once its done.

cwshredder should deal with that one.
if not just search for a removal tool on google.

Thanks dx100uk. I'll try that.

After much hassle I finally managed to get the panda scan complete. It found 1108 viruses; most of which have helped themselves to my zip files, which they have used to hideout in.

I won't post the entire scan, as it's legnthy, and also 99% of it identifies the same virus.

I've also run the CCleaner, but It won't let me copy the starup programs list.

I've therefore taken a snap shot of the screen and attached it.

I tried the CW Shredder, but it doesn't find the virus. I've tried to find a free worm remover but i Just can't find one. Can any one help. Thanks. Also will it work if I just removed each of the 1000 + viruses identified by panda scan manually, by deleting them individually.

Also I came across this thread BleepingComputer.com > Help Please (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. The reason I put it here is because it tries to deal with the same virus. But more importanly, the person also has this new virus which install lots of files on the PC which end in .t. The reason this is significant is because the reason I reinstalled my pc was to get rid of .t file virus.

I'm now thinking maybe these viruses are linked, and I'm reinfected with same virus as I'm using external backup drives with my pc.

I would just save the most important stuff to disc then format one of your hard drives then unplug the other ones and install windows on the formated hard drive then do the same with your other hard drives.

I'm pretty sure now that this virus is linked to the ".t file" virus that I had on my PC before I reinstalled windows. I found the link at the following McAfee
database:

McAfee ? Computer Anti-Virus Software and Internet Security For Your PC (http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?id=description&virus_k=140835).

y2krog2000 I'm probaly gonna have to do what said, but the problem is I'll need around 70 DVDs to backup all my neccessary files.

Thanks for all your help everyone.

Just format one of your hard drives and stick as much pictures, videos and other stuff that wont have a viruses on it and stick your programs on cd or dvd.

where are these files you need to keep?

are they on the non system disk or on the system disc

ie i mean you appear to have 2 versions of XP

are they on the one that is currently providing the operating system
or are they on one that does NOT have your current operating system.

Hi,

These files are on the non system hard disk, which I use for storage. I have a LANDriver -It's an external Hard drive which is only used to store stuff.

I've run McAfee but that doesn't actually find them, I'm now running Kaspersky's 30 day free trial and it's identified these viruses and hopefully will disinfect them. But the problem is that nor Kaspersky or Panda has found any viruses on the operating system hard drives, Which are still freezing at start up(showing a blank screen) for about 5 mins.

ok
well bearing inmind what has happened to your PC i'm not suprised it freezes here and there.
they are problems we can deal with [re the hackthis log] in the other forum you found.

id go with what you are doing, let 'anything' clean you files on the external drive. then rescan with panda & keep doing that till its clean.

then its time to get the PC going properly.
but id only do that with the external drive disconnected.

sadly my time is a wee bit tight at present else i'd try & get better response times to you.

i must say one thing though, which does puzzle me.........how the :driver: were all these virus allowed to spread through you PC?

where were your firewall alerts?? cause that virus would have been sprogging out stuff left right and centre?
not 'just' running the windows one are you?

something is dreadfully wrong with your security etc cause that thing was allowed to spread through your pc for a very long time!

Kaspersky is about the best but as its only a trial Iwould have used avast home as its free and does a boot scan that gets rid of most virsus's after you install and reboot.

dx100uk I appreciate the time you have given, it's been invaluable.

I had McAfee full version running and AVG free version, whilst I also had Symnatic virus scan (came free with google pack) installed. I was using Windows firewall, and also I had my routers physical firewall on. But none of this actually found the damned virus. I only realised I was infected when I saw hidden files on my desktop, all ending in .t. I couldn't find anything on the internet about this virus, as it was a new virus; and thats probaly why none of the security s/w picked it up. I then reinstalled my O/S.

I think the T virus had something to do with, or is linked with this current virus I have; as I haven't found any .t files via searching.

Also, I've got the full version Kaspersky now, and I've uninstalled all the AVG and other software that I tried.

Once again thank you for your help and your time, and everyone elses.

y2krog2000
17-11-2006, 01:08 PM
You should only have one virus program on your pc at a time because if you have more than 1 they can see each other as virsus's and none of them will work properly.

Y2KROG, you are right, thats why this time I've decided to uninstall all other virus programs except Kaspersky. I checked out AVAST it seems cool, I'm going to try that on my Laptop and see how stable it is. Thanks for the recommendation.

Also, can anyone recommend a good firewall, maybe one thats free. I've currently got full versions of Sygate and Kerio, but they seem a bit complicated, and the constantly bombard me after start up with the same stuff.

Maybe Kerio is the best one, if that is the case then tell please tell me and I'l reinstall that on my PC.

Thanks

ok well that explains how it happened

a router and/or windows firewall WILL NOT stop outgoing nasties!!:banana4:

i would sus that because you have lots of DVD content that you are p'haps getting these from the net. bad idea!:banana4:

esp with no outgoing firewall protection to alert you what is going on.!!:banana4:

stick on ZA Free:locked: and kill the other two f/w's they do stuff all really.

use AVGFREE alone, dump the rest. for anti-virus.:locked:

I appreciate the info. I've now downloaded Zone Alarm Firewall.

I was wondering why no one thinks keeping Kaspersaky as the virus s/w is a good idea. I got the impression from earlier posts that is was one of the best ones around.

dx100uk I was suprised to learn that the routers firewall was not adequate, as before I use to have norton systemworks, and when i got my router I stopped buying norton.

Thanks for both of your suggesstions, I'm gonna read up on Avg vs Avast.

By the way the scan with Kaspersky has taken well over 32 hrs, Is that normal.

If you can get a copy of diskeeper then use it, its far better than the defragmenter thats built into windows and you can change your mft if its not the right size.

After several Kaspersky and a few Panda Scans I think i've finally gotten rid of the virus, from both the Operating Systems and storage drives.

If any one else has got this virus, I would suggest you turn off system restore and select the highest security settings in Kaspersky and then do a scan. This will also scan hidden folders, such as Recyler and System Volume information, which weren't getting scanned before.

One of my o/s is starting fine now and the other ones not to bad - but I think thats because I've got lots of programs installed on it.

By the way the original problems still there, the "display properties menu" still freezes. But I'm not too woried about that anymore, I'm gonna Defrag my hardrives over the next weekend, and if that doesn't cure it I'll just reinstall the windows.

I'd like to thank every one for thier suggestions and help, especially dx100uk, y2krog2000 and Shipoftheline. Thank you.
