Hi,

Can anyone suggest a good site to test your download speed? My config file says 10mb, but the speed is definitely not 10mb lol?more like 1mb if that.

testing is good but always check your broadband providers site to see what speed they offer and for what price . because they dont always automaticaly upgrade you . a phone call is the quikest way to resolve things

Great site, done a speed test on my N*L connection. great speed, shame about viewing standard web pages over a proxy. (:| it's so slow compared to other providers that do not use proxys.

Don't forget when speed testing that the indicated speed from whatever site you choose is also influenced by internet traffic at that particular time, also how busy your own ISP traffic is too. It also depends on what phase the moon is in!!

Testing or "pinging" a server in outer mongolia is unlikely to ever get you a test result anywhere near what you ISP claims you are getting. This is not to say that your ISP is 100% honest 100% of the time about your Bandwidth! ;o)

Sometimes a phone call and a little complaining can yield more results that all the registry tweaking in the worl and I speak from personal experience as long suffering customer of telewest and thier amazing oversubscribed servers!

DO NOT USE speed test web sites, they never give you an accurate reading!

If you have WinXP, use the Windows Task Manager's "networking" tab, to display the incoming and outgoing traffic (see web sites for full details). Then go to Microsoft's Gaming web site and download a few MB's of a semi-old game (like Zoo Tycoon 2).

The Task Manager networking tab will show you the upload and download rate, against your network speed - a simple calculation will tell you your true connection speed.

If you have the Task Manager networking tab open and doing nuffin' on the web, if you see the red (upload) line well above the yellow (download) line - this indicates an upload of some sort and could be a virus.

Repeat - the networking tab is on Win XP's Task Manager only (and not any earlier version of Windows).

You can always obtain a program called DUMeter which does the same thing, from memory there's a 15 day trial if you get obtain it from their web site.

Why Microsoft's Web site? Well it's usually fast, Symantec is another one - any fast web site will do and only a few MB's, just enough to show movement on the graph.
