got a 360 thats past warrenty and has xtreme 2.2 f/w on it. I got the 3 red light error so ripped it apart, did the heat gun trick and applied some arctic silver thermal paste. It was all fine for about a week and then I got the 3 red lights again, has anyone tried any other methods to get rid of em? Any tips would be appreciated.

Seems that xbox 360's braking down are quite common :( although the support is ok my mates broke last week but he got it replaced this week.

On my original xbox the customer service was fine too, as when they changed the prices when they first released them I got 2 free games and a control pad! ace.

Also that new power lead for it as some of them blew up was easy to get.

Ive been given an xbox with 3 red lights today and i tried the towel trick.
It worked for about 15 min then crashed and went back to the 3 lights.

I think there is a major problem with the circuit connections.

What this does is heat up the circuit joints and causes them to expand making the joints tighter.

A lot of peeps have had some success this way but from what i hear its only a temporary solution.

The problem itself is probably caused by the exessive heat these machines produce (causing some of the joints to loosen)

Anyway all i did was wrap a towel around the machine obstructing all the airvents with a small towel....i would'nt seal them off too much, just enough to slow the flow a bit.

Sounds insaine i know but there is some truth in it.

Unfortunately these would be exellent machines are a pile of crap.
You would expect better from such a large company as microsoft.

I tried to repair mine going on the theory that the joints were dry.
I dismantled it and applied a gascat heat gun to all surfaces to attempt to re-flow any dry joints.
when i tried it after putting it back together i managed to get it to start up but only for a couple of minuits.
Dismantled yet again and applied heat at a higher level.
Still no joy....spent most of the day on this 8-|

I have seen alot of these 360s break down now and in my encounters with them it seems that the pre 2006 models that are out there seem to be failing around about now. I have had 3 turn up in less than a week all dated 2005 all with the 3 red lights.

Had this xbox stripped 4 times today.
removed the heatsinks and gave the gpu and memory chips a blast with the hot air.
I have it running now with a fan blowing onto the open case...been fine for hours.
It seems that the new update increased the workload of the gpu creating more heat and in some poorly manufactured units the joints are giving way.
This is a very poorly designd case as the dvd drive sits directly above the gpu causing excesive heat build-up and melting some of the finer solder joints

A good idea would be to mount the unit inside a pc case and add extra fans.
If you add up the size of all the components, its as big as a pc anyway
Unfortunatly microsoft made this unit small and smart at the cost of functionality.

I dont think it would have so much appeal if it looked like a pc.

I've had the 3 red light and did the heatgun, it lasted about 3 days so i did the heatgun again and also did the 12volt fan mod, it then lasted about 4 weeks, so i did the heatgun again.. It's somat that once it happens it's gonna keep happening.

Did you take the heatsinks off and blast both sides?

Thats where most of the problems occur

Have it working now so i might as wll mod it before i put it back together

having went through plenty of consoles in my time, i have found the best solution is to buy from A**A.

They will replace any console up to a year (with receipt of course)

On my third 360 (no2 lasted 5 weeks), but the store have always done a straight swap no questions asked, extended the warranty (a full year everytime) and i've even managed to gain a few games out of it.

just my two cents
