Doe's anyone else use these now because Cable doesn't have them ? I'm seriously considering getting one because I'm watching more and more freeview channels and I'm feeling I miss out on the Sky+ like features

To be honest I think Sky's range of pay-channels (if you take away live sport) is pretty poor.

I bought a freeview PVR last year and its one of the best decisions I've ever made.

But is it your default stb or is the cable/sky box default ?

I still have Sky/motorised sat for live sport, but spend 90% of the time recording and watching freeview content (hooked both up at the same time to the main tv).

Timeshifting is the new sliced bread. :)

r so you scart them all together then ?

I got one of those fancy scart switchers but if I had 2 I'd hook them up as follows.

TV AV1 --- Sly/cable ---- DVD recorder AV1
TV AV2 --- PVR ----- DVD recorder AV2.

That way you get the best of both worlds.

I've got a Humax pvr 8000T Freeview and its a cracking bit of kit. Easy epg programming etc. I just wish the damm Replay box was as reliable. The 1 I got was second hand with only 1tuner but the newer 1's have a dual tuner so you can watch 1 channel and record another. Their not a bad price either compared to some of the others. Film four is on freeview now as well so the networks building slowly. Cant recommend the Humax enough.:trustme:

I may wait for this new box from topuptv so it will be more future proof.

TopUp TV - Just Select And Play (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. You currently have 0 posts. The site doesn't go into too much detial about this new service but I'm guessing they are going to use the TV stream Redhot used to download these programmes over night. Too make this work better I'd imagine this box will be mpeg4(TV stream is only 6mbit). Now this would also be something which may interest the hackers too ;)

From what I've found after spending a few hours reading reviews and checking price's this seems a good deal

Thanks for the link Ship, looks like a good price. The Humax is a newer model than mine and the twin tuner 2 record function is a great idea as is the usb 2 connection.
I am a bit puzzled though as to why the Freeview boxes should'nt be future proof? Once their bought they receive all the free to air channels whatever they may be? The topuptv option is much more likely to get its format changed I would have thought? Dont you have to keep paying for topup to get your channels etc? I admit I know very little about topuptv so please educate me as to why it is better and how? Thanks.

If you follow shipofthelines link above that seems like a pretty good deal. I got mine used from a friend cheap but it only has 1 tuner so I cant watch and record 2 different programes, the newer 1's can. The 1 in the link can record 2 at once. The Humax there also has a usb 2 connection so you could transfer a recorded program you wanted to keep direct to your pc or a portable hdd. That way you could keep an entire series together and burn them to disk using your pc if you wanted.
The best place to look is online or ebay for best prices. You could Google either what you want or try; Scan UK, Komplett uk, E buyer or SVP have some good deals. I have never had any trouble with my Humax, yet when I got it I had never heard of them. Its easy to use a and programes just by pressing ok on the menu, so no timers to set. definitely 1 of my best buys ever.
If mine has a shortcoming it's that it does'nt have PDC so it doesnt know when a program starts late as they often do ITV, but the newer ones may have this by now. I will definitely get a newer Humax without even looking at any of the others I am that chuffed with this one.
LOL, sales pitch over
I never recommend things like this but I bang on about this one to anyone who will listen.

If/when freeview gets anymore mux's its more than possible they may be mpeg4 because you get more bandwidth which = channels. This is by far the best option for HDTV too because it would be crazy to try and push HDTV on freeview using mpeg2

Little example

Average DVD movie Mpeg2 4/5GB
Average Mpeg4 movie 750MB/1400GB

i have a humax 9200t, great piece of kit. It's totally revoloutionised the way i watch tv, before i used to fall asleep wanting to watch a program, now i just shedule the program and let it do it's thing.Picture quality is superb also is the time slip feature means you can pause a live tv program then continue at your lesiure. Buy one you will not regret it

I like the usb option on the Humax, think thats a very useful feature as you can extend the size of the built in hdd easily by just transfering the data. You could also transfer it to a laptop and take it with you to watch anywhere. The Humax will record 2 channels at once, not sure if the Sagem does that. The Humax has to me a proven reliability so there's more than enough features to warrant the extra 50 quid.
I would have thought as we get nearer to the big switchover to digital only tv that the bandwidth or mpeg 4 issue would be resolved, as they are still keen to push freeview. Film 4 would not have bothered becoming free to air if there was going to be a problem and all the BBC programmes are freeview. I dont think that this will be an issue in the next couple of years.
Besides which nothing is actually future proof these days as there are so many improvements and advancements being made all the time.

I think you made a great choice in the end ship and you wont regret it. When you get it it might only list 4 channels at once on the epg, unless you have the latest firmware already installed. If it does there is a firmware upgrade for it that will list 5 channels and an extended recording time and a some other improvements. It is available to download at hummy.org . The Humax is very well supported on there so that is another big advantage of this great piece of kit. Its worth signing up on, there are no disadvantages.

I've seen that site mentioned before but everytime I try it I just see "It works!" and nothing else. The main thing which pointed me to the humax was someone mentioned that if you replace the HDD it gives you a messege to format in otherwords does it all for you :)

Here is a link to the Hummy homepage Ship; Welcome to Hummy.org.uk the home of the Humax PVR9200T (To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 1 or greater. I always format a new drive to a machine if possible but it means you can wipe any drive at anytime or a used drive and set it up to work on the Humax. I hope this is useful.

Now on another subject do the freeview codes work on this ?

I have to admit I dont know because I have the Replay box so I never tried them. I see no reason why not though. I think I tried a code for the online games on the older 8000t that I have once and that worked fine.
Let us know what you think when you have had chance to play with it a bit.

The Correct remote for the 9200T is RT-531, Big gray thing with a slide out bottom panel. Just in case it's right but faulty.
I agree i think you got a bad firm there, You could have got 1 from Currys for 180 quid I think.

Glad to have been of help ship. nice to feel useful now and again,LOL. dont forget to let us know what you think. By the way if you plan to record a programm from the EPG, make sure you have the box switched on a good 10 minuits before you want to set it, so that it can update. May not take that long but just to be safe. I find also if you scroll to the channel you are planning to record (you dont have to watch it) the epg will usually update quicker.

Not entirely sure what you mean by that? A Replay box like a Dbox gets ALL the channels, Freeview and cable channels so yes you dont need a freeview box as well, unless its for use with another telly or something.
I hope thats what you meant?

If you download (Transfer) recordings from the Humax 9200t to a laptop/pc, I can recommend using VLC player to view the transport stream files.

It works very well and is fantastic quality. You might also want to consider looking at VideoRedo which can edit out the commercials once you have the file on the computer. It can also save the file into other formats.

Hope this helps.

i have a pace puma freeview pvr which i would recommend. only 20gb but stores enough for me. there are plenty of tutorials on the net on how to upgrade the hd with a laptop one thats bigger too. its got a twin tuner which i think is essential. only thing i have found a bit annoying is that you cant link it to a pc via network cable/usb to burn recorded stuff onto discs.
