Is it a USB 2 device ? If so, have you got service pack 2 loaded ?

If you are using windows xp it should work stright away if service pack 2 is installed, or if you made the external hard drive yourself with a hard drive and enclosure you will need to format the hard drive to get it to work.

Was it in a pc then you took it out and plugged it into an enclosure to make it external?

If it is windows me your lap top is running then u just need to install the drivers for it, but on your main pc it would work straight away without the need for drivers because it is xp.

You should have got a cd with the drivers on it, if not try the update driver option in device manager if you didnt. Do you even know the exact model you have?

Go to device manager, right click my computer, click properties, click hardware, device manager find the hard drive in the device manager right click it with the driver cd in the lap top and click update driver.

Plug in your external drive then right click "my computer" on your desktop and select the manage option. Now select "Devece Manager" , look in the right hand pane for your external drive (will pob have a x through it) Right click it and select "update Driver" if you have a driver disk then use it - if not let it carry out a web search if requested.

u could look in my computer and see if the drive shows in there.
If not try plugging something else into the usb port on the laptop to see if the usb ports are working.
