What do you do with a 389 Pontiac block with "a gaping crack in one cylinder the size of a tennis ball?"
Pontiac introduced its 389 V8 for 1959, offering it through 1966, when it became the standard engine for the GTO. Fed by three two-barrel Rochester carburetors, the Tri-Power variant entered the scene in 1964, rated at 348 horsepower. For 1965, it got twelve more horses, keeping Pontiac's power figures roughly between Ford's and Chryslers.
If you ordered your GTO with the Tri-Power motor, you also had the option of a limited slip differential and metallic brake linings. And if chose those, from that point forward, you only needed to worry about your tire-smoking Pontiac's ridiculously slow steering. Then again, back then nobody cared that much about Pontiac's steering ratios. Or at least not after hearing about the 360 horses under the hood.
This time around, Hagerty had a box full of 389 bits, as well as a block with a huge crack in one of its cylinders. The resulting time-lapse takes us through several months of Davin Reckow's work in ten fun minutes. Enjoy, and good luck getting your Tri-Power going this winter!
