Google is working on getting Chromecast gaming off the ground, and its first step is a goodie: the boffins over at Mountain View have got legendary FPS Quake III running over the airwaves.

The important bit is that this is a lot more involved than just playing Quake III on a phone and then firing the video over to the Chromecast plugged into your TV. We already have that. Instead, it uses special Cast APIs so that your phone screen can be used as a secondary display, perhaps to show you the map or a HUD.

Your phone will basically be running two screens at once. Google already has Quake III running at 720p, 60 frames per second using this method, although we don?t know how muscular the hardware it?s using is. Google developer engineer Leon Nicholls says they?re using a separate USB controller to play the game, but we quite like the idea of turning the whole Android phone screen into a virtual gamepad. Google does say ?mobile device sensors? can be used with this API, after all.

Google has released the code used for this demo work over at the Google Developers blog, but unless you?re already a coding fan, you?re best off waiting as you still need to compile it using proper dev tools.

It paints a bright image of the future, though, right? With a Chromecast and phone in your pocket, you could have a full game console on your hands. What games would you want to play?
