View Full Version : Sharp bypasses the set-top box with Roku-powered smart TVs

Roku makes some of the best ? and cheapest ? streaming boxes around, but Sharp has gone one better and left out the box altogether. It's announced two smart TVs that are powered by the Roku platform, so you can access all the same features without cluttering your lounge with unsightly boxes.

The sets are both 1080p LED models, one 43-inch and one 50-inch. It's not the first manufacturer to announce a Roku-powered telly ? Hisense, TCL, Insignia and Haier have previously ? but it is by far the biggest.

You'll also get access to Roku Feed, which lets you know the minute pre-selected new releases are available to stream. Pick a film ? even if it's in the cinema ? and you'll know the second it's available, even if it's years later.

The likes of LG, Samsung and Sony either opt for their own smart TV user interfaces or have adopted Android TV. Android TV is Google's second stab at a lounge-based user interface after Google TV flopped.

The bad news? Both Sharp tellies are US-only at the moment. Here's hoping they hit these shores soon.
