View Full Version : Fukushima Tomioka the abandoned city

Three years ago, a 9.0 earthquake ? the fifth largest in recorded history ? rocked the east coast of Japan causing a powerful tsunami that sent 100 foot waves which flooded some inland cities. One of the Japanese prefectures hardest hit by these waves was the now-famous Fukushima, home to the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear power plant. The aftermath of the tsunami caused a massive nuclear accident the plant, which required over 200,000 people to be evacuated from the surrounding area.

While some of the people in the area furthest from the reactor have been allowed to return, the towns closest to the accident site are still ghost towns.

One of those ghost towns is Tomioka. The 16,000 residents that once lived there are still not allowed to return and likely won?t be for years.

HEXaMedia, a Tokyo-based company specializing in aerial photography, sent a drone into the ghost town earlier this year and recently released a seven-minute video of footage from the area. You can check it out below:
