A registry hack made it possible to access Windows 8.1 Update 1 directly through Windows Update, and while Microsoft has plugged the leak, the update files are now available online and can be used for a manual install.

Windows 8.1 Update 1 is focused at improving the experience for keyboard and mouse users. Changes include a power and search button in the Start screen for non-touch devices, ability to minimize, maximize and close Modern apps, right-click context menu for Live Tiles, automatic skipping to the desktop interface for desktop users, preview of active Modern apps in the taskbar, and more. Update 1 will also decrease the memory requirements for the OS, a move Microsoft hopes will help it run better on low-end hardware with limited storage space.

The leaked update is not confirmed to be the RTM (final) version, though given the fact that it?s secretly available on Microsoft?s update servers, it?s likely free of any noticeable issues. The official rollout is expected to begin on April 8, so it would be a good idea to wait it out instead of updating via the leaked files, lest it brick currently stable Windows 8.1 installations.

I've just put it on and its fine but to be honest I was kind of getting used to W8 and where everything lives etc. it still doesn't mean that I like it tho' but I prefer to know my way around the most current OS so maybe me using Classic Shell isn't the best of ideas.

EDIT: I've changed my mind, you have the best of both worlds with Classic Shell, cheers Allan
