I've decided to try out win8 on the family on 'their' laptop (its actually my laptop but stops them from using MY pc!)

I'm going to dual boot the laptop with vista(legal version) and win8 as a secondary install. it will automatically boot into vista if win8 not selected.

I have to stress ive no intention on installing win8 on the main pc (ever) unless they have an option between the metro style and the trusty old desktop but wanted to see how non techy people get on with the new operating system. I'm not using a touch screen laptop which may have made the use of win8 easier.

Will report back here and tell you how they got on or not.

Well installed it on my works laptop. And i think its growing on me! I know, i know saying i like win8 is like spouting swear words from my mouth. Its even compatible with all my work applications.

Still, i'd prefer a touch screen laptop!

Now to test it on the family!

I've been using Win 8 for a couple of months now and after you've got over the initial shock of 'different look' it's exactly the same as Windows 7, I think it will be better on a touch device, but on a desktop it works and works well.

IMO people are only saying bad things about it because it looks different, or worse because they are helplessly following on other people who say it's bad, you gotta make your own mind up. Windows 8 is just getting a bad rep for nothing in my book.

i think win8 on touch screens/kinect/or even phones makes sense. Its just that i'm a good old keyboard and mouse user! until touch screens or kinect type devices become the way to interact with computers then i will be sticking to either win7 or linux
