I have an all-in-one 43db boost aerial, which seems to work fine in the bedroom upstairs, but does need to be positioned well. I could never get any non-powered aerials to work properly. My neighbour has a 20db boost in her kitchen, but this has to be hung from the window latch to get anything like a watchable signal.

I agree with 'dx' depends on your transmitter.

If you need a high or extra high gain group C/D or wideband aerial I would recommend a Televes DAT 45 (or DAT BOSS as they are called now) - I have one in my loft and have no issues whatsoever - plus it's relatively short compared to others with a similar gain.

One thing worth checking, make sure you do not have any foil backed insulation behind the roof tiles as this will affect any aerial sited in the loft (usually only if you have an attic conversion, otherwise it should just be felt then roof tiles).

Found myself trying to get a signal for my tv upstairs by moving around with the aerial then spamming the channel update button, just like the old days minus the red button!

Just to add +1 to this post. I've just moved into a shared house and this has given me the best signal I've had in ages.

I use the telescopic aerial which came with my USB tuner. Positioning towards my window gives me a strong signal on all channels!

Like above it certainly depends on the transmitter. Where i have just moved to the transmitter is so much better i have next to no interference.

I also just got a usb transmitter for my laptop which i have still to setup but was wondering how good it will be travelling long distances on the train (needs to keep the Mrs entertained lol)

usb transmitter...you mean receiver dear boy!

not very good if its one of the freeview tv ones without an external aerial.

ok when you go by a transmitter sure it'll be ok

but ofcourse the regions and channels will change and you'll forever have to rescan the thing as you go across country.
