lol those are some ancient games; I used to love Q2 DM myself... 42kb connection over 56kb modem... happy times!
Well the two FPS biggies are the Call of Duty series and the Battlefield series. CoD is more twitch and I've never liked it because of the small maps and kills-streaks and perks mechanics. BF is much more tactical and squad based with bigger maps and vehicles.
On to of that, there's still the various flavours of Counter-Strike kicking around and plenty of free-to-play FPS's too, even a free-to-play Battlefield.

I know this is an MMO, but I've started playing Funcom's The Secret World and it's really quite good. It has different quest/mission types; kill tasks, exploration, escort missions and even research where you need to use real-world resources. There are no levels, just skills which can be combined, for example: assault rifle and swords or Blood magic and swords. Worth a look, imho

you could try guild wars 2, dota 2, or World of Warcraft. All are great games currently out.

I know it's not a new game, but I've always loved Runescape :)

If you fancy trying an MMO WoW or Guild Wars 2 are good choices!

WoW's just had an expansion pack so everyone is still gearing up and exploring the new content so you won't feel too left behind!

Guild Wars 2 is really fun too.. it's relatively new aswell (having just been released before WoW's panda expansion) so again, it's a good time to step in and play as you won't feel like you're playing catch up as much!

Could try TF2 if you want an FPS. It is cartoony and has a few of novelty gimicy type things in it but still a solid FPS. Another few recommendations could be ARMA 2, much more realisitc FPS. Picked up Counter Strike: Global Offensive too which is a good bit of fun.

Dota 2/HoN/LoL are all popular nowadays too.

Then ofcourse you have the big blizzard games like WoW, Starcraft 2 and to some extent Diablo 3.
