Hi this will return again (sorry), what happens is the consloe gets hot and then the motherboard starts to warp, thus breaking contacts for the cpu, on the old xbox 360(phat) was common, how old is it??

If i was you i would get rid of it and get a new one. The older phat models are prone to it the slim models are better at handling the heat . The older consoles will just die one by one due to poor design from MS im afraid. Once they have shown the 3 red lights its only a matter of time before they show all the time and then its game over. Even if you do a fix on it it is NEVR 100% again and i would not trust one that had been fixed in any way reballed xclamp fixed they are all the same not reliable anymore

in the mean time, buy something like this

and keep the unit horizontal and not sitting directly on the a floor or carpet. My reasoning for this is the feet allow air flow under the console helping cooling and if the solder does melt then if its still horizontal when it cools down then hopefully the solder will stay in place!

Just my cents worth to extend the life of your pride and joy :-D

As tinker said, i'd get rid as fixes aint 100% reliable, they are prone to go again in the next coming months. However if you fancy the challenge, you will need the secondary code once the RROD returns. To do this you press :

Hold the Sync button in. Then press the eject button. This will show differant red lights. The codes are easy to work out, remember 4 red lights = 0. So if the box shown 4 - 1 - 1 - 4 your error code would be 0110.

Then look up your error code here

Generally Xbox 360 will comes with three red light. Xbox red lights help in difficulties regarding with the Xbox product. We can share the wireless connection for the laptop using our xbox 360 red lights without adapter.

If its a RROD error, then its GENERAL hardware failure. Using a secondary code helps determine the issue, ie, 0110 RAM fault (usually a cold solder joint) meaning a reflow would be best option.

You could throw a heat gun on to it with some flux to melt the solder, but it's not the most accurate of fixes. The more permanent solution would be using a BGA oven to reball the chips. This is basically removing the old solder (Microsoft used utter garbage solder on the original 360s) and replacing it with new solder contacts. The ovens are pricey though, and a lot of little shops that do repairs lie and say they're reballing it when they're actually reflowing it (the reflow is remelting the original solder).

Heat gun method success can vary from not at all, to a few days, to 6+ months - you'd maybe be as well giving it a go to get a little more life out of it. I'm not too sure what they're charging for reballing these days, I was tempted to get myself an oven a while back but decided against it.

The red ring of light is when the CPU gets to hot and de-solders itself from the motherboard, my advice would to keep your Xbox lying down. This will reduce the risk although the damage may have already been done.

I know a few trusted people who reball and reflow. If needed pm me. Your box will have to be posted via courrier.
This wiuld be the best fix for rrod. The towel trick. You be better just unplugging the fans from the motherboard and lettinf the box overheat
