Was just wondering what speed this modem is actualy capable of doing as i'v just put a valid sb4100 10meg mac on mine and 10meg config but only getting 5meg.

Bladesftp, as far as I've read the SB3100, SB3100D and SB3100i are all capable of 38Mbps maximum downstream and 10Mbps maximum upstream.

The above from: Support and Downloads (http://broadband.motorola.com/consumers/support/default.asp?supportSection=DiscontinuedProducts)

I hope this is the case as I've just bought one. I've got it working with a 4meg mac address, and I'm going to try it with a 10meg next.

never saw m8s go over 4mb, just a quick question. why are people buying these, they seem to be priced around the same money as the 4100/4200 but are a lot harder to do an not as good. reason i ask is a m8 bought one cause someone told him they were better just wondering if it had happened to anyone else.

Stickywicket, the more I read I'm beginning to understand why you ask. I got one cheap with a dbox2 - both modified.

If it does go 8mb I'll be happy with that; if it doesn't go over 4mb it'll be a bit of a let down but at least it'll mean I can use 2 modems and not have to share a 2mb connection between 3 PCs (me downloading films/music, missus e-mailing the world and son incessantly online gaming).

I'm going to do some more scanning from a mate's and try a few different 10mb addresses but whatever the result, I'll let you know.

k np m8, have tried numerous macs so would be great if you could get it faster.

i'v tried 11 bund03 macs on my 3100i with hackware flashed on it .and fastest i'v got was 563kbs download 57kbs upload . the reason i chose too do this modem was because i found it in my loft from when ntl first rolled out broadband and you had to buy your own modem.

Telewest confirmed to customers that this modem would only achieve around 8meg when they released their 10meg product and swapped customers modems free of charge, so the modem cannot go any higher than 8meg.

Yep, it certainly seems that 4mb is as fast as this one'll go. It can upload at over 1/2 mb no problem, but after trying several 10mb macs from another ubr the download speed will not budge any higher. The only thing I haven't tried is swapping my own mac address and forcing a 10mb config (as I'm only on 2mb) but this seems pretty pointless - and risky!

As far as I know these modems only have a 10meg ethernet not 100 as is needed to go above 10meg speeds.

I bought an SB 3100 as my first private modem. At that time NTL, as Virgin were then, only had a 2 meg connection speed I think.
When they upgraded the service to 10 meg I phoned them and told them I had a 3100 and it would not give me my full speed. As it was a private modem they would not replace it, so they gave me a reduced price for my 8meg only capable connection.
I might have forgotten to tell them when I got an SB 4200 not long after. :lol3:
Things have changed since then and they won't officially let you register your own modem, so you would not be able to get the discount I got.
Best thing to do is source another modem from ebay, 5100e recommended, then either offload the 3100 to another mug punter or just chuck it in the bin and put it down to experience. Old tech is not usually good tech when it comes to computers and the net.

How easy is it to be detected by your isp for having an uncapped modem?

Very easy, but aslong as you have basic service it seems like they leave you alone.

if they "do" detect it,, your nick card could be blacklisted, If that happens then you wont get online, so its always best to use something like "SMAC" so you can change the mac on the nic card if need be.
