To help start your Windows Phone apps in a flashMicrosoft's Mobile Computing Research Center (MCRC) has brought together a range of researchers, working in all manner of mobile arenas and cutting-edge technologies. One of the latest projects the MCRC has undertaken on is an intelligent system, for the pre-fetching of Windows Phone apps.
The basic idea is to speed up the loading of mobile apps, by letting the OS intelligently cache the applications that it predicts you'll want to use. Theoretically, this could mean near-instant loading of apps - providing the technology can correctly anticipate what the user wants to load.
This isn't a development of the future either, as the MCRC team has a demo of the tech already hammered out, which is due to be presented at the MobiSys conference in June.
The research has been codenamed "Falcon", and is part of a wider project to explore and enhance mobile operating systems, in terms of responding to context across all areas.
One researcher describes Falcon as: "A context-aware mobile app preloading component for mobile OS. Based on intensive data analysis of app usage across multiple mobile users, FALCON presents a decision engine which exploits temporal and spacial characters of user behaviour to pre-load apps ahead of time, thereby improves the responsiveness of smartphones."
In other words, the system will use data based on previous usage patterns, including factors such as the location, and time of day - all to determine which apps need to be preloaded.
