Rewiring my house, asked the sparky to run a pair of cat5 cables from every room in the house to a cubby hole upstairs where I was going to put all manor of clever techie things, via a patch panel. He labeled the end of the cat5 cable in each room. . . but not in the cupboard upstairs... Any ideas how I can quickly identify which is which (there are 18 pairs)

This won;t be very quick but it will work.
Go to each room in turn and short out a pair. Go to the cupboard with a meter and find the shorted pair. Label the cable and repeat.
Good luck

lol make the ends off and get yourself a cat5 tester they are only around £9 and if you got 18 cat5 cables it will be handy for the future.

I was hoping there might have been an easier way, guess I'll have to get testing.

can get cable tracers too, sends a tone down a pair and you wave a wand thing near the cables to find that one.
There pretty handy but might be overkill if your only gonna use it once
