Microsoft is testing dual-core Qualcomm S4 CPUs with the next version of Windows Phone, according to a report published today. The dual-core S4 chip is reportedly undergoing tests to make it ready for at least one Windows Phone 8 smartphone slated to arrive later this year.
Citing "sources familiar with the company's plans", the report says that Sprint is very interested possibly carrying the first dual-core Windows Phone 8 device. Sprint released its first Windows Phone, the HTC Arrive, in March last year and has not yet offered any new Windows Phone handsets on its network.
While heartening, news of Microsoft testing dual-core chips with Windows Phone 8 is hardly a surprise as Android devices have been packing dual-core processors for over a year. Microsoft appears to be playing a bit of catch-up to enable dual-core functionality on its mobile OS.
