Previously, the free-to-use service was only available over a Wi-Fi connection.
The revamped application also adds an updated Adobe Flash player for improved playback.
Writing in a blog post, product manager for BBC iPlayer on mobile David Madden stated: ?We have had a lot of feedback and Android Market comments on the video quality of the BBC iPlayer Android app.
?As a result of your comments a great deal of work has been done to improve the playback experience and this update includes an updated Adobe Flash player.?
?The app will, of course, evolve and improve as we refine the interface and add features.?
Madden also confirmed that work is ongoing on the BBC iPlayer mobile site and that once this is complete Android tablet owners will also be able to view content over a 3G connection.
