Responsible department: Department for Culture, Media and Sport

After the 9pm watershed adults should be free to make their own informed viewing choices. 1/ After 9pm encrypted television channels with age verification should be permitted to show any BBFC certificate 18 equivalent content regardless of genre, broadcaster motivation or context. The BBFC makes no such distinction and Ofcom should not either. 2/ After 10pm free-to-air adult channels should be permitted to broadcast any cert 18 equivalent content subject to adequate labelling and the ability to block them. Sexual content on sex themed channels has attracted an extremely small number of complaints, the majority from competitors. The serious or widespread offence that Ofcom cites simply does not exist. 3/ After midnight all channels should be permitted to broadcast any cert 18 equivalent content subject to adequate labelling. 4/ After midnight encrypted television channels with age verification should be permitted to show BBFC certificate R18 content and its equivalent.

I completely agree, as an adult you should have all media available to view if you wish to.
With parental controls being built into almost all media receivers these days, a parent can easily block content from being viewed by minors, whatever the time of day!
Incidentally, there is nothing to stop minors watching hard core clips on the likes of Winamp whenever they want to, making the restrictions placed on the relatively soft television offerings a bit of a joke?

Exactly! Plus the "porn" shown on UK channels is pin locked so I don't understand their fuss? Yes the pin lock isn't stable as this sites keygens shows, but that's their fault which they should sort out.

I'm not sure if 12 year olds are clever enough to Google "Babestation codes" and if they are they could just as easily type in words like "sex" or "porn" and get plenty of hardcore stuff uncensored on the net.

In certain countrys there is hardcore porn on free to air channels! I just don't understand why everything in this country is so locked down? Take for example anything Jeremy Clarkson says now and you get hundreds of complaints from morons.

There are music videos that are more explicit than some of the bloody babe shows at night!

The sooner ofcom are gone the better imo. Just wasting taxpayers money and not giving the public what they want.

Petition signed from the link in your siggy m8. I'm sick to death of all this nanny state bo**ocks and health and safety gone mad in this country! How can you expect people to behave like adults, when you treat them like kids?

After all, we don't tell the ministers not to get their toes sucked, crawl around in nappies for their "nannies", or wear their wives underwear to the party conferences! :p

^^ Loooool hahahaha

Agree that x-rated stuff on the net is a LOT more hardcore than these so called 'porn' tv channels, and its not pin-locked! :D

Bit late to this thread (haven't been on site for a while), but I totally agree with the OP. Many EU countries show films with much harder content after midnight or often earlier. Why should the UK prohibit this? Even TVX and the like don't exactly show what I would consider decent porn.

It's a ridiculous situation. In truth, I think the biggest hurdle to this is the fact that R18 material is NOT allowed through mail / internet order. You actually have to go to a shop for it. I think if THAT situation changed, I think the TV situation would change too. I don't even think the PIN lock needs to be particularly clever, after all, searching google isn't.

Yeah it's just another example of the nanny state that is the UK :-)

I have less of a problem with R18 being shown post watershed (or even an enhanced watershed, say midnight) than I do with the so called "edited for daytime broadcast" shows which are now on every channel, shows like CSI and criminal minds still contain adult themes unsuitable for children an are not pin protected.

I completely agree with this. I dont see why, in the digital age, content cant be pin-protected to prevent access age restricted content.

What i never understood was how a aalogue terrestrial (although pay-tv) broadcaster could do this in South Africa for years. The even have multiple audio tracks, an uncensored and a censored one, that way the viewer can restrict content by PIN as they see fit. The UK though, cant,i dont get it...

100% agreed - that's what PIN protection is for.

It was much easier in my teens to just goto my local papershop and buy a porn mag and VHS tape and at least was proper porn albeit low picture quality not crap TVX soft stuff. Don't see the point in censoring TVX type stuff other than to let them make money for fake simulated sex films. I've seen boobs since I was probably 10 or something and didn't make me a pervert rapist or anything, certainly safer wanking over some pictures than practicing on real flesh lol!
