Struggling mobile phone Company Research in Motion claims that they are aware their new Blackberry Bold 9900s often fail to start and that new software used in the Smartphone could be to blame. In a statement issued at the weekend, RIM said users of their BlackBerry Bold 9900 and 9930 were experiencing problems.
Some of the phones appear to spontaneously fail and refuse to turn on easily or at all. The company claims that they don't have an explanation, but it noted that software was at fault and planned a fix.
RIM is "actively working on a software update to resolve this issue," a representative said.
The issue didn't show up in review units and has generally been absent for months, suggesting that either it was a long term issue or one triggered by a newer software revision preloaded on some Bolds.
While it's unclear how widespread the issue might be, it only reinforces a string of problems in recent weeks for RIM. Its nearly four-day outage damaged its reputation right as the iPhone 4S was available for customers to switch.
It also had to delay PlayBook 2.0 to early 2012 and leave its tablet without a feature promised several months earlier. Also, its overall market share has been shrinking as it loses ground to Android and the iPhone in markets around the world including Australia where hundreds of businesses are dumping their Blackberry's for smartphone models from Apple and Android manufacturers.
