Sky has announced a raft of new features to its Sky+ mobile app, including series link functionality for the first time and a refreshed design on Android.

Launched in 2009 on Apple's iPhone, the Sky+ app enables Sky subscribers to use their mobile devices to remotely set recordings of programming on their Sky+ set top box.

The app has since racked up 2.4m downloads on iOS devices (iPhone and iPad), with users generating one million remote record requests each month.

The Android app has been downloaded more than 900,000 times since it went live in July 2010, making it the most popular Sky app on the Android market.

Sky said that it will introduce a number of new features to the Sky+ app over this month, including the addition of series link, enabling iOS and Android users to remote record complete series of shows.

Series link will also be made available on Sky.com from early next week for anyone wishing to try it out.

A separate update rolling out this week will result in the design of the Android Sky+ app being "brought in line" with the iOS app, as well as a bespoke app being launched for Android tablets.

Sky currently offers a portfolio of ten mobile apps across iPhone, iPad, Android, BlackBerry and Windows 7 devices, attracting a total of 18 million downloads over the years.

The apps include the acclaimed Sky News app and the Sky Go service that launched in the summer, allowing Sky customers to watch live TV on their PCs, smartphones and tablet computers. Sky Go has so far attracted 2m unique users, consuming more than 30m pieces of content during October alone.

In a posting on Sky's blog Sky Views, Sky's director of product management Hilary Perchard said that the mobile apps help "deepen" the engagement between Sky customers and the firm's content.

"Having provided our customers with innovative apps over the past five years, we've had the time to reflect what exactly it is they want from us while they are on the move, which has helped us deliver a variety of intuitive services that genuinely enhance their experience of Sky," he wrote.

"And, judging by the rapid recent growth of Sky+ on mobile devices, it appears that the appetite from customers for new ways of finding the programmes they love is as strong as ever."
