Cheaper pool tables have melamine bases (rather than slate). Melamine is the stuff that kitchen units and worktops are made of (i.e. chipboard with a hard plastic laminate).
Or you could try plywood. However you might find it sags a bit in the middle (a fifth leg should sort that out tho').
For legs, try nule posts intended for staircases.

I recon you'd be better of using a thick piece of mdf

hmm
you know what
i might buy one (folding legs)
and make it more stable with bolt on legs (sort of heavy stall table)
i will try it in the future though
very busy atm

I made a 6ft pool table many years ago using a chipboard base from plans I got from a small advert in a national newspaper. It played well enough for a "home made" table :)
Don't know if the advert still runs though, like I say it was a long time ago.

Your better of using the proper felt and slate when you build your own otherwise it wouldnt be very good to play on.

Yeah post how you get on if you pick this project up again.
This sounds like a pretty interesting project, I might try something like this myself some day.

You'd be better off buying one from ebay....its suprising how cheap they go for as they are pick up only normally and not everyone has the space for them.
I bought one 2 weeks ago from there....it is 6 x 3 feet, slate bed,1 1/2 inch balls and cues.
The felt is a little rough but not ripped
I payed ?5 for it and have it set up in my summer house...plays well.
I also saw a lovely riley slate bed table...and i mean lovely, go for ?150.00
Half gutted i did'nt bid on it.
Look for your LOCAL that is shutting down. Sure to pick a bargain up from there.
