MACs are MAC addresses - think of them as like a programmed into the hardware serial number when they are manufactured. Every piece of network equipment has its own unique one, and is usually fixed. However you can get a burned MAC address which means one that has been programmed by someone other than the manufacturer into the piece of hardware. Every cable modem has a MAC address so they can be identified uniquely on the cable network. Speak to some of the other guys in here about soem of the cool things you can do with 'em :P
Hope that explains things a bit.
