Virgin Media has announced that a raft of 3D content from Discovery will launch on its video on-demand platform this weekend.

Under a deal agreed last month, the cable operator's XL TV customers will be able to watch specially-created 3D programmes from the US broadcaster, including natural history, extreme sports and engineering programming.

The content kicks off this weekend with three crime and thriller features, including 3D episodes of paranormal documentaries Ghost Lab and The Haunted, along with I (Almost) Got Away With It, following the stories of fugitives trying to escape prison.

Aleks Habdank, the director of digital entertainment product at Virgin Media, said: "We're dedicated to offering the most up-to-date content available on the market and this latest deal opens up new ways for Discovery channel fans to experience its superior quality programming.

"Our on-demand service is a great way to deliver 3D content and for families to get their 3D fix, allowing them to pick and choose what they want to watch, when they want to watch it and coupled with our Virgin Media TiVo service provides the most advanced TV offering in the UK."

Sky, which has also agreed a 3D content deal with Discovery, last month announced the formation of Colossus Productions, a new 3D production company in partnership with Atlantic.

Well it's a start I suppose!
They would be better off concentrating on airing more HD channels, which is much more widely used than 3D though.
They only have about another 40 HD channels to include in their packages, to catch up with the Sky content! :p
