View Full Version : Is it possible to have a "welcome to WOD" plugin for the new users page?

OK here I go again, I have an idea which causes other people work! ;)

When we get a lot of members joining and saying hello, it can be quite time consuming to keep track of and reply to them.
This means that we often copy and paste a welcome at busy times.
Rather than repeat ourselves to each new member, would it be possible, or desirable, to have a one click greeting method on the new users introduction page?
Much like our thanks and liked this post buttons, a box under the introductory post could say;
The Following members would like to welcome you to WOD:
With the user names appearing in that box.

The object being that more members might welcome new members because it was quicker.
It would also save many of us just repeating our greetings individually, as well as hopefully reduce the amount of new members posting "Hi I'm new here too" in someone else's hello thread, in order to get access to codes etc.
This might also help reduce the workload for some mods?
It would not be meant as a replacement for posting a greeting in the normal way, if you so desire, but as a faster enhancement to the existing system!

I have heard that this would require a special plugin, or at least the adaption of an existing plugin to work.
The questions then are;
Is this possible to do?
Would people like to see it if it were possible?
Does anyone see any disadvantages to it if it were implemented?

Just an idea, so I would be grateful for any comments, either for or against it.

im all for it m8.

yer itll deffo be some sort of plugin unless we can code a simpler html thing that has $username auto insertion and :wod: from YOUR USERNAME

my idea would be just a simple copy/paste auto paste method?

or make a smiley thats says welcome to world of digital from me! lol

your idea is better tho :D
this will take some looking into mind

I suppose we could trial something, I will look at the options available.

One problem I foresee is this eliminates new members need to introduce themselves

You and me both DD!
I must miss out on welcoming new and potentially good members, just because I don't always have the time to read all the welcome posts.
If there are a lot I find myself scrolling through all the new posts, just looking for the real items of interest.
Once I have replied to something that interests me, I click on unread posts again, only to be presented with the same big list to scroll through again!
I have been tempted to just "mark all posts read", just to clear the way to look more easily at the main posts. But then if I do that, I can miss a post or new thread which would interest me.

I thought if it could work, then I could clear all the greetings quickly, then get on with reading the other main posts?
I could then be tempted to actually greet more new members, rather than dismissing many of their posts because of time constraints!
After all even a simple welcome is better than no welcome at all?

Your html idea is interesting as well Spini and if it is easier and more practical to implement, then that has to be a good thing. :thumbup2:

Ah no Red, that isn't supposed to happen at all.
The new members still need to introduce themselves as they do now.
What is different is the way existing members can respond to that new members post!
I hope it would actually increase new users making their own introduction thread, rather than just hijacking an existing one, which often happens now.

Thats is an excellent idea Diablo :appl:

I think i have only welcomed 2 or 3 new members, the ones that i thought were genuine and not here just for codes.
If we have this new system then maybe people could write their own welcome messages for "genuine" members or the members who actually put an effort and not just say "hi" and just click this button that you're proposing for the members who just say "hi"

Glad you like the idea Pejazzle.
You have sort of got it.
The thing is new members post their introduction often as their first post, in many cases just to get access to the codes. However not all of them join for that reason and we can't tell from what is probably their first post, what their future usage of the site will be!
If they just say "hi" that doesn't count as a post, so a mod will usually delete it when they see it!
For that reason, unless they give us grounds to think otherwise in their welcome post, we have to treat all potential members equally!
Often before I reply to the post, I will click on the users name, which will show me their profile, if they have made any other posts and where, or if they have just gone straight for the keygens or codes.
If they just went for the codes and are not even shown as browsing, then its usually better for them that I ignore their post, because stroppy gett that I am, I tend to leave not very complimentary messages, if I am sure they are just here to leach! :p
All we can do in fairness is greet as many as possible the same way, then find out what kind of member they are going to be later. To do that we need to be able to do it quickly, or just click the dislike button for those who make it obvious that they are only after the one thing!
You see my point better now m8?

Nice of you to say that Mags, I think I am finally getting the hang of this forum lark now, and yes I am enjoying the forums thanks! rofl

Seriously, something like that, with a box underneath for the members names that have clicked on it, would do the trick I think?

pmsl @ Spini!

I have found an older mod that does this I will have to test and see if it works on VB4, if not then its a no go for now unless we send diablo a pm on all new members on joining so he can post pmsl keep him busy wont it

I appreciate your trying Red. :thumbup2:
That was quick, so I hope if it works the rest of the mods and admin like the idea.
I don't want to tread on anyone's toes,.................. again! :o

As for the second statement :flag:
I thought we wanted new members, not me scaring them off! :lol2:

hey diablo, me and you for promotion soon aye?

well done on your promotion diablo, best man won lol...

im all for improving somewhere i like, or is that somewhere that puts up with me?
ive always got ideas for improving something that is already improved,
nothings perfect, if it was then why do virgin media insist on me giving them feedback via questionaires?
i speak my mind on them things, its only way they listen, they dont just want ok hunny love you and im ok and stuck up, what they want is bad things youve experienced and ways YOU could change things and give ideas.

people like you and me diablo need a title, professional suggestioners/ site reconstructioner advisors

allways remember one thing, it doesnt matter if they are only here for codes everyone should be Wellcomed and its up to us as long standing, respected members /mods/ admin to make sure that we do make them feel Wellcome at least we can say that everyone has been greeted and maybe they will see that we have taken the time to say hi to them

I strongly agree with this statement, ive kinda changed my mind about them just taking them cos thats all they ever do anyway, and we always end up with the odd straggler that actually stay and post stuff.

if nothing else were getting noticed and thats good because were getting high up on google too.

Yes I agree with nao we should greet them,...............so long as we have the time!
When there are a lot joining at once it becomes a real chore?
That's why I wanted a shortcut.
I am trying hard not to care who just comes for the codes or not, after all they are an integral part of the site.
That aside, when we all take the time to read their posts and welcome new members who have made their 1 post introduction, then they never even bother returning to click thanks for that welcome, don't you find that a bit annoying?
How many man/woman hours are spent pointlessly welcoming people that frankly don't give a $h1t whether we welcome them or not I wonder?
They obviously have something else to do,..........well so do I!

What about the html option Spini mentioned, is that a possibility?
I know you have plenty of other things to do with your time, just thought it was worth a mention?

none available and its too complicated for my tiny brain to code at this time, will wait see if maker updates his version i asked if he was going to.
