The iPhone Dev-Team have just released their ?backup plan? (Redsn0w 0.9.7) for untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak. The just released beta version of Redsn0w will enable you to jailbreak (untethered) iPhone 4, iPad and iPod touch 4G on iOS 4.2.1.

http://img714.imageshack.us/img714/6471/redsn0w0972.png

Here?s what you will need to know before proceeding:
iPhone, iPad or iPod touch running iOS 4.2.1
iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with SHSH blobs saved for iOS 4.2 Beta 3.
Mac OS X
Access to iOS 4.2 Beta 3 firmware file.
If you rely on Ultrasn0w unlock, STAY AWAY from this version of Redsn0w.
Currently limited to iPhone 4, iPad and iPod touch 4G only.

The best thing about this ?backup plan? is that it doesn?t require you to restore or re-jailbreak your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch.

Warning Note:

This is a beta tester program. Things can go very wrong, so please don?t even consider testing if you have pictures or other media on your device that you haven?t backed up!

Until we fix some sandbox issues with bluetooth, the bluetooth functionality is disabled.

Here?s how to do it:

Note: Skip to Step 2 if you have previously jailbroken (tethered) your iOS device on iOS 4.2.1 with Redsn0w.

Step 1: Restore your iOS device to the official iOS 4.2.1 firmware and jailbreak it using Redsn0w by following our step by step guide posted here.

Step 2: This untethered jailbreak completely relies on SHSH blobs saved for 4.2b3 (iOS 4.2 Beta 3). To check whether you have SHSH blobs saved for iOS 4.2 Beta 3, start Cydia and wait for it to completely load the main page. You should now see ?SHSH: 4.2b3? on top as shown in the screenshot below:

Step 3: Download Redsn0w 0.9.7 and connect your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch with Mac.

Step 4: Now download usbmuxd from here and extract it on your computer. Start Terminal in python-client directory and then run the following commands as shown in the screenshot below.

chmod +x tcprelay.py

./tcprelay.py -t 22:2222

Step 5: Start Redsn0w and point it to the official iOS 4.2.1 firmware file.

http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/558/redsn0w096b4.png

Step 6: Now click ?Next? and select ?Jailbreak Monte? option, followed by selecting iOS 4.2 Beta 3 firmware file.

http://img63.imageshack.us/img63/5550/redsn0w0973.png

Step 7: Now make sure your device is both OFF and PLUGGED IN to the computer before you click ?Next?.

http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/4314/screenshot20101101at808.png

At this stage you will be presented with a screen where you will have to quickly hold ?Power? button and then while holding the ?Power? button, you will now have to hold ?Home? button too. Now after few seconds release ?Power? button but keep holding ?Home? button until installation begins.

Step 8: Sit back and enjoy while Redsn0w will do all the rest for you. Once done, your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch will restart automatically and you will find it fully jailbroken (untethered) on the latest iOS 4.2.1 firmware.

Warning About RedSn0w Untethered Jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1

The Dev Team released RedSn0w 0.9.7b1 this morning, an untethered jailbreak for iPad, iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4G on iOS 4.2.1. When we first reported about this updated version of RedSn0w, we advised you not to use because it is still in beta, and most importantly, comes with a few issues worth mentioning.

We still think that you should hold off and be patient. A more stable version should be released soon. In the meanwhile, if you are curious about what problems you might encounter after ?untethering? your iPhone, here are some of the issues that have been reported:

* Bluetooth is disabled
* iPod player doesn?t work on the iPhone 4 or the iPad
* Application Switcher will crash your iPhone
* YouTube won?t work
* Videos from the camera roll won?t play
* AirPlay won?t work
* Some App Store apps not working

If you rely on an unlock for your iPhone, you should definitely stay away from this untethered jailbreak for the time being.

Update #2: *The second beta is now available (testers ONLY please!). *This version should fix all the native app crashes (including Task switcher). *That’s the only*change in from beta1….Bluetooth is still disabled.

Update #3: *The third beta is now available (testers ONLY please!). *This version extends the fix made in beta2 over to the non-GUI programs too (like the daemons that handle media content). *That should cover things like Facetime, Winterboard themes, and embedded videos in iTunes. *If you had trouble using the usbmuxd in previous betas, please wait until we incorporate that into redsn0w itself (i.e. don’t bother trying this beta3, just wait for the integration).

Update #4:*The fourth beta is now available (testers ONLY please!). Starting with this version, redsn0w no longer requires you to install and run a separate program for the usbmux (this was a non-trivial procedure for many). * It?s okay to keep that program running if you normally use it for ssh anyway. *We also think we?ve fixed a race condition in the GUI that was causing redsn0w to crash during the ?Preparing JB Monte Files? step. Nothing at all has changed on the iPhone side (where the main issues are still just Bluetooth and Skype).

*If your device is currently jailbroken with one of the previous betas, please do a fresh restore first.**

Update #5: *The fifth beta is now available (testers ONLY please!). *Bluetooth is now working (and any sandbox-related issues should be resolved too). *Please do not pirate the 4.2b3 IPSW! *Only those enrolled in the iPhone Developer program have legitimate access to that IPSW using these links (the links won?t work unless you?re a legit developer currently logged in).

There is actually a Windows version of beta5, but it?s excruciatingly slow*compared to the Mac version because it?s forced to use files on your hard drive instead of RAM while it?s processing the very large IPSW images. *It really is very very painfully slow, so we probably won?t be releasing it for testing purposes unless it can be sped up somehow.

Update #6: *The sixth beta is now available (testers ONLY please!). *This version fixes Skype (and as expected all along, the Skype issue turns out to be unrelated to sandbox patches).*Please do not pirate the 4.2b3 IPSW! *Only those enrolled in the iPhone Developer program have legitimate access to that IPSW using*these links*(the links won?t work unless you?re a legit developer currently logged in).

Unlike the last few betas, you can freely run beta6 over beta5 without a problem (but for testing purposes, we?d really like people to try both ways?.from stock, and from already jailbroken). *If all you want to do is fix Skype and you?re already untethered using beta5, just run beta6 and deselect every checkbox.

Now that the sandbox, Bluetooth, and Skype issues are fixed, our next priority is porting Monte back to 4.1. *We?ll also try to make the Windows version less painfully slow.
