The adddition of fast dormancy to iOS4.2 aims to see device batteries last longer and network traffic decrease

Analysis carried out on Apple's iOS4.2 by Nokia Siemens, has shown that the company has activated a new technology in the firmware to moderate the iPhone's use of bandwidth and battery power.
The tech, called fast dormancy, sets the device up with a series of parameters which dictate how often it 'wakes up' and communicates with the outside world when not in use, leading to less frivilous use of power and network traffic.
The inclusion of this feature in the latest firmware release indicates that Apple is committed to reducing the crippling load on 3G networks that its data hungry device produces, as well as improving its customers user experience by improving device's battery life
