t's not surprising at all when we see a publisher safeguarding its games against piracy, like what Activision is doing now for Call of Duty: Black Ops. The interesting bit in this particular instance is how they're going about the crackdown. According to a report from VentureBeat, the publisher hired a private investigation firm that now asks pirates to cease and desist. Politely.

The firm in the report is IP Cybercrime, which specializes in sniffing out pirates online. Activision hired them to do their thing and track down parties who may be trying to pull some black ops of their own. But instead of turning pirates over to the authorities, IP Cybercrime is giving them the chance to stop and reveal where they got their copies.

One such pirate, known as "Computer Healer", posted some YouTube videos on his encounters with IP Cybercrime. Despite the amount of cursing in his videos, Computer Healer actually describes the investigators as "polite". He then turned over his pirated copy, which he got for US$ 150, saying that he never intended to re-distribute it.

IP Cybercrime reports that most of the pirates they've confronted so far have been "scared", so aggressive confrontations may not have been necessary at all.

So if you don't want these polite pirate-hunters giving you a friendly call, you can just wait until November 9th to purchase the game legally.
