Skype for Android will be on it's way to handsets across the globe sometime this year, with plans to "Set the bar" for videos calling.

Skattertech have been chatting with the people at over at Skype and have some interesting news, news which many android customers have been waiting for ever since the OS was born... Skype is finally coming to the Android platform!

Brianna Reynaud, a member of the Skype PR team had this to say in an email correspondence:
"We will be bringing a direct to consumer app to the Android marketplace later this year. This application will be available for all consumers globally to download regardless of carriers. (i.e. similar to how we offer the iPhone app today)"

This is great news for customers who are not currently on a mobile carrier with Skype exclusivity. At the moment 3 in the UK exclusively offers Skype on their handsets. It only works with 3 contracts and only over 3G, not WiFi ,If you try an find it on the Android Marketplace you will fail miserably, it is only available through the 3 site or bundled on one of their Skype branded mobile phones.

Along with plans to release a global app for all mobile networks, Skype have big plans to revolutionise video calling on mobiles, like they already do on Mac and PC computers across the world.
Brianna Reynauld also had this to say regarding video: "We?re betting big on video, and we intend to set the bar on mobile video calling, and it?s something we?re going to do this year."
