Microsoft has said that the forthcoming Xbox 360 dashboard upgrade will render all non-authorised third-party produced memory cards obsolete.
Scheduled to go ahead on November 27, the planned firmware update will mean that anyone using memory units not licensed by Microsoft will find that they no longer work.
Writing on his Major Nelson blog, the firm's Larry Hyb said: "When preview program members start receiving the Xbox 360 system update next week, one of the changes is that unauthorised memory units will no longer work with the Xbox 360.
"If you've moved your profile or saved games on to one to 'back it up', you'd better move it back on to an authorised Xbox 360 storage device prior to taking the update.
"If you continue to use an unauthorised memory unit after the update, you will not be able to access your stored profile or saved games."
Hyrb added that anyone needing help in identifying licensed Xbox 360 storage devices should visit the official Xbox website for more information.
